In 2021, German gaming heavyweight Roccat released the Magma, a unique gaming keyboard that brought lightning fast gaming performance with a membrane layer making it a silent and avid killer. With many various gaming keyboards in my personal arsenal, one of the biggest issues I’ve had in the past is that mechanical keyboards aren’t really designed for heavy writing-related typing. Yes, they are exceptional when it comes to battle but when working on an article or writing a story, I found myself having issues with typing my words as fast as I normally do with a non-mech keyboard. The Magma was and is the bridge between gaming and writing and is currently fixed on my desktop. Fast forward to 2023 where Roccat decided to release a 60% version of my favorite keyboard by way of the “Magma Mini” (RMM).
DESIGN AND BUILD:

The RMM boasts a sleek and compact design that caters to users looking for a space-saving solution. Its 60% layout does away with the number pad and extra function keys, making it remarkably compact without sacrificing essential gaming controls. The build quality is also surprisingly solid for a keyboard in this price range, with a robust plastic chassis that manages to maintain a respectable level of durability. Flip down feet give the RMM a slight rise for typing comfort and the ridge lined design gives off tactical vibes. Roccat thoughtfully placed the fixed USB cable far off to the left which also helps inhibit cord tangling messes.

Equipped with lightning fast membrane switches, the RMM not only delivers immediate in-game response but does so like a ninja in the night. I have to admit that I do hate when I can hear a squad mate click-clacking away, which is distracting and can take away from hearing important enemy footsteps. With the RMM and the Magma full-size keyboards, these obnoxious sounds are no more. The Magma line is also excellent for Twitch streamers that want their viewers to focus on their audio and not the keyboard clicks.

Roccat decided to include a premium feature in the affordable RMM by way of their proprietary button duplicator technology that expands your command power with a single keystroke. Activation is as easy as holding down the designated “Easy-Shift[+]” key (this key doubles as the caps lock) to unlock a second function for a host of keys in the WASD zone. Also featured in the RMM is Roccat’s anti-ghosting tech that allows you to press up to 20 keys at the same time with each of them registering as they should. Swarm software also makes it easy to further customize the RMM and all Roccat keyboards.

One of the coolest features that is not as common as you would think is the RMM’s dust and water resistance rating of IP33, which gives it upgraded protection from careless spills while in the heat of your gaming session. If you are like me you’ve had plenty of spills and splashes here and there so having the ability to pour a glass of liquid on your keyboard but still be in the fight is definitely a winning feature!
RGB:

The RMM features customizable AIMO RGB lighting, allowing users to personalize the keyboard’s aesthetics to match their various moods and/or setup. With five zones of 10 programmable LEDs underneath a frosted translucent panel, the RMM illuminates like a volcanic flow of color. With the free Swarm software, lighting effects and color options can easily be tweaked in any manner. Personally I love using the AIMO synch setting which links up RGB lighting for all of my Roccat peripherals (Sense AIMO pad, Kone XP Air mouse, Syn MAX Air headset and Torch microphone).
SWARM SOFTWARE:
Swarm software is one of my favorite offerings in the Roccat family. With Swarm, all Roccat peripherals can easily be firmware updated and customized. With a few keystrokes the RMM comes to life with everything that AIMO RGB lighting has to offer. Additionally, Swarm gives users the ability to remap keys, create macros and even change click sounds. The software’s interface is straightforward, making it accessible even for those who aren’t tech-savvy. This level of customization is a big plus for gamers who want to tailor their keyboard to their specific playstyle.
FINAL THOUGHTS & CONCLUSION:
LOVED:
- Top tier premium features for an affordable price.
- Water and dust resistance rating of IP33.
- Membrane keyboard equals silent keying for streamers.
- Excellent keyboard for work and play.
- Customizable AIMO RGB “magma” lighting is a swimming pool of colors.
- Free Swarm software easily installs firmware updates, customizes keys RGB lighting and more.
NOT SO MUCH:
- Fixed USB cable.
- Non-swappable keycaps.
CONCLUSION:
The Roccat Magma Mini 60% gaming keyboard is a tiny titan that holds its own in a competitive ocean of keyboards. With its smaller footprint and well placed USB cable, the RMM can easily be positioned in many different positions in any gaming set up to give users a comfortable competitive edge in the heat of all battles. Portability gets a thumbs up making it easy to grab and go whenever needed. I wish the USB was detachable but that definitely is not a deal breaker. As an editor I appreciate the ability to use the RMM for my writings without the need to swap out when it comes time for some serious gaming. Don’t get me wrong, mechanical gaming keyboards can also be used for mundane word processing tasks but I found myself making less errors using the Magma keyboards. Coincidentally, this review was created using the Magma Mini.
The big question is, do I like the Magma Mini and the answer is a key-pounding YES! Big thanks to Roccat for supplying our review sample.
