MALUM takes us back to the glory days of liquid jungle..
If the Sunset EP was the most immediately accessible entry point into MALUM’s remix trilogy, The Mission EP is the one that earns its place through genuine unpredictability. Where Prins Thomas brought cosmic patience to “mr. sunset,” Telephones brings something harder to pin down — and the result is the most energetically restless of the three releases.
Telephones, the Bergen-born, Berlin-based DJ and producer, is known for an approach that refuses to sit still — house, balearic, dub, leftfield club music all flowing in and out of his work without obvious hierarchy. That restlessness suits “the mission” well. His main remix moves with a raw, infectious groove that feels lived-in rather than engineered, and his Underground Jungle Club Remix pushes even further, taking the track in a more rhythmically driven direction that carries a distinctly old-school flavour. There’s something in the DNA here that reaches back toward the golden era of jungle — Goldie, Fabio and Grooverider hovering somewhere in the background — filtered through a Nordic sensibility that gives the whole thing its own particular atmosphere.
The inclusion of a remix from AMØBE, a producer and member of MALUM themselves, is an interesting curatorial decision that pays off. Hearing the band’s own creative orbit applied to the source material adds a layer of self-reflection to the EP — an inside perspective sitting alongside an outside one, each illuminating the other.
Completing the package with the original version of every body grounds the release in exactly the same way the Sunset EP handled its album tracks, reminding you where all of this started before the remixers got their hands on it.
Within the trilogy, The Mission EP is the most club-focused and rhythmically adventurous chapter. Essential listening for anyone who harks back to the glorious sweaty basements of jungle raves in the 90’s..
