MALUM shares a powerful new project from some of Norway’s best new creative producers
The remix EP as a format has a complicated reputation. At its worst it’s a contractual obligation, a collection of half-interested reinterpretations dropped into the world with minimal fanfare and even less purpose. At its best it’s a genuine curatorial statement — an invitation for artists you respect to tell you something about your own music you hadn’t heard before. MALUM’s trilogy of EPs revisiting their debut album every body falls decisively into the second camp.
The Sunset EP is the most immediately accessible entry point of the three, and the choice of Prins Thomas as its centrepiece explains why. The Norwegian space disco pioneer is a long-time touchstone for the band, and his reimagining of “mr. sunset” treats the source material with the unhurried confidence of someone who genuinely understands what makes it work. Rather than dismantling the original, he expands it — stretching the track into an extended cosmic journey that retains the melodic and cinematic qualities of MALUM’s version while pushing it gently into deeper, more open water. It’s the kind of remix that makes you hear both the original and the remixer differently, which is the highest standard the format can aspire to.
The EP is rounded out by album tracks “release” and “rewild,” a smart decision that grounds the Prins Thomas interpretation within the broader world of every body rather than letting it float free of context. It gives the release a coherence that remix EPs often lack.
What’s most impressive about MALUM’s approach across the trilogy as a whole — each remixer invited to choose the track that spoke to them most — is the trust it demonstrates. The results across the Sunset, Mission and Bouncer EPs span cosmic disco, balearic house, industrial techno and underground club music, connecting the band’s debut with scenes spanning Bergen, London, Berlin and Hong Kong.
