The renowned Milanese DJ and producer, Maike Depas (real name Michelangelo De Pasquale), known for his dreamy house track ‘Voyager’, is ready to shake up the techno world once more with the release of ‘State of Techno’, out on June 16 via The Innovation Studio. This new track is a daring blend of past and present influences that will undoubtedly set dance floors ablaze in 2023. Drawing from the hallucinatory trance of the Blue Room and the hard-hitting post-Wall techno of Tresor Club, Depas expertly weaves these sounds together to create a fresh experience with a familiar pulse. He is, as he puts it, “trying to propose something new but at the same time the audience is reminded of something that already happened in the past.”

Depas’ new work unites the nostalgic sounds of the 80s and 90s with more modern symphonic and cinematic elements, resulting in a heightened atmospheric track. As part of this, the rumbling bass opener ‘Culture’ sets the stage, before ‘Dark Room’ hypnotizes listeners with its lacerating sequences and electro-style vocoder commands. Then comes ‘Industrial’, a relentless percussive barrage led by Depas’ unique guitar synth, ‘the Edge’. Capping off the track list, Mattia Trani delivers a masterful remix of ‘Industrial’.
The ‘State of Techno’ release is accompanied by the music video for ‘Dark Room’. This immersive audiovisual journey into the metaverse offers another gripping experience similar to ‘Voyager’. In this narrative, our protagonist is awakened by a mysterious voice that leads him out of a clandestine laboratory and into a world filled with uncertainty. With the promise of liberation or the threat of continued servitude hanging in the balance, the protagonist faces a crucial choice. This compelling story was brought to life through the tireless efforts of Depas and young Parisian CG artist Matthieu Martin, also known as Impossible Realities.
Speaking about the experience, Depas said, “For me this is my first important step in the techno scene. I wanted to create a huge impact, really consolidate it.” This ambition required seven weeks of intensive collaboration with Martin, with Depas describing the process as, “We worked strongly together every single moment of the day.” The end result is an evocative music video that boldly augments the auditory experience of ‘State of Techno’.
