Hearth and Hollow Audio has released Hadalhorn, the second entry in its Imaginary Instruments series, built for Kontakt Player and focused on expressive wind-based performance. The instrument centers on a conceptual woodwind design, but its functionality is grounded in practical articulation control and flexible sound shaping for modern production workflows.
Hadalhorn operates as a multi-articulation instrument with a wide range of playable modes. These include standard sustains, accented sustains, evolving tones, short percussive notes, and extended drones. Additional articulations such as bends, randomized accents, and continuously rising pitch movements expand how the instrument can be used across compositions.

Articulation depth and signal control
The strength of Hadalhorn comes from how its articulations respond to input. Velocity-based control allows different behaviors depending on how notes are triggered, helping create variation without requiring constant manual editing. Legato mode is available for sustained phrases, while other modes introduce instability and movement across longer notes.
The instrument also includes layered signal paths labeled Land, Sea, and Air. These can be blended to adjust tonal balance and spatial character. A dedicated low drone control adds additional depth to the lower register, independent of the main articulation settings. Global controls for attack, release, dynamics, and reverb provide further shaping without requiring external processing.
This setup gives producers a way to move between controlled melodic parts and more abstract textures within the same instrument. The transition between those states is handled through performance input rather than separate patches, which keeps workflow consistent.
Kontakt integration and pricing
Hadalhorn runs inside the free Kontakt Player, with a footprint of approximately 1 GB and support across both macOS and Windows systems. It is designed to operate within standard DAW environments using common audio drivers, making it accessible without additional platform requirements.
The instrument is currently available at an introductory price of $45, reduced from its standard $55. Existing users of related products in the same series receive an additional discount at checkout.
Hadalhorn fits into a category of tools aimed at expanding tonal options without complicating setup. Its design focuses on articulation variety and performance response, which makes it suitable for producers working in film scoring, ambient production, or any context where evolving textures are needed alongside more traditional melodic parts.
Will Vance is a professional music producer who has been involved in the industry for the better part of a decade and has been the managing editor at Magnetic Magazine since mid-2022. In that time period, he has published thousands of articles on music production, industry think pieces and educational articles about the music industry. Over the last decade as a professional music producer, Will Vance has also ran multiple successful and highly respected record labels in the industry, including Where The Heart Is Records as well as having launched a new label with a focus on community through Magnetic Magazine. When not running these labels or producing his own music, Vance is likely writing for other top industry sites like Waves or the Hyperbits Masterclass or working on his upcoming book on mindfulness in music production. On the rare chance he's not thinking about music production, he's probably running a game of Dungeons and Dragons with his friends which he has been the dungeon master for for many years.
