Eternal Research has announced that the Demon Box, its first commercial instrument, is now available for preorder. The release marks a major step for the company, which has spent years developing this triphonic EMF instrument and controller. The Demon Box converts electromagnetic fields into sound and light, giving artists a new way to experiment with the hidden energy of everyday objects.

From a cell phone to a power drill, nearly any source of EMF can be transformed into a playable signal.

The triangular design of the Demon Box has recently been patented and represents an original approach to musical hardware. Built with 33 inductors arranged into three channels of 11, it allows sound designers and producers to extract EMF signals with clarity and precision. The instrument can be used on its own to create textures or connected to external setups as an audio-visual controller.

Eternal Research sees the Demon Box as the start of a new category of tools for artists working at the edge of sound and science.

A New Instrument for Producers and Artists

The Demon Box is designed to serve both as a standalone sound source and as part of a larger workflow. Producers can route the triphonic output through their DAWs, applying panning, phasing, and effects to sculpt new layers. For those working with visuals, the instrument can integrate with video synthesis, DMX lighting, and platforms like Max, Jitter, and TouchDesigner. This makes the Demon Box equally relevant for studio sessions, live performances, and cross-disciplinary projects.

Connectivity has been a priority in its design. The unit includes three mono audio inputs, three mono outputs, a triphonic audio output, three CV outputs, and MIDI out via both DIN and USB-C. Each channel features its own parameter controls, giving users the ability to shape EMF signals and blend them with external gear in real time. Eternal Research head engineer Bryn Nieboer emphasizes the advantage of this setup, describing how the three-channel architecture supports spatial mixing and layered effects that go beyond the limits of stereo.

For producers looking for new sources of sound, the Demon Box turns environmental EMF into material that can be captured, processed, and arranged like any other instrument. Its ability to act as both a controller and a sound generator adds flexibility in the studio, while its unusual workflow opens up unexpected creative outcomes.

Preorder Details and Knobcon Showcase

Eternal Research will be presenting the Demon Box at Knobcon in Chicago from September 5–7, 2025, at booth B400. Attendees will be able to test the unit and experience how it interacts with common devices in real time. To mark the launch, the company is offering a special preorder discount. The Demon Box is priced at $999, with $100 off available between September 5 and September 13 using the code DEMON33. Shipments are scheduled to begin in mid-autumn.

Founder Alexandra Fierra describes the Demon Box as both a musical tool and a philosophical project. The design draws on the concept of an inverted pyramid, challenging traditional definitions of what counts as music and what is considered noise. By turning electromagnetic fields into usable signals, the instrument blurs the line between technology and creativity, expanding the role of producers and artists in shaping sound from unconventional sources.

As the debut product from Eternal Research, the Demon Box introduces a new direction in instrument design. It is a piece of gear that highlights hidden forces in everyday life and gives creators the ability to manipulate them directly. For anyone exploring experimental audio or seeking fresh ways to integrate controllers into their production setup, the Demon Box presents a distinctive option that is now entering the market.
