Leeds-based DJ and producer Tom Brownlow and Spain-based house music saxophonist JenJammin Sax have teamed up for their latest single, “Time.” Tom Brownlow, known for his eclectic mix of genres ranging from soul legends like Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye to electronic music influences such as The Prodigy and Burial, has crafted a unique style that blends old-school pianos, grooving house beats, breakbeat, and garage drums.
JenJammin Sax, originally from the UK and now based in Spain, has made a name for herself in the house music scene with her soulful saxophone performances and compositions. Her collaborations with notable producers like Kryder and Tom Brownlow have led to releases on prominent labels such as Armada Music and Vivifier. Jen’s saxophone edits have been widely supported by DJs around the world, and her dynamic performances have become a staple in the house music community.
In an exclusive interview, Tom and Jen share insights into their creative process behind “Time.” The collaboration, which began during the 2020 lockdown, has relied heavily on virtual communication, with Tom in the UK and Jen in Spain. Despite the distance, the duo has developed a seamless workflow, starting with Tom’s basic track layouts and Jen’s saxophone riffs, resulting in a collection of uplifting and joyful music that resonates with listeners.
How long have you two known each other, and how did this collaboration come about?
I first met Jen during lockdown in 2020. I had a track that needed a sax line. I’d seen Jen playing sax on a viral video she made for Leeds United.
I reached out to her and sent her the track and she absolutely nailed it. It became our first release ‘Kolamu’.
Can you share any behind-the-scenes stories from the production process?
With Jen living in Spain and myself living in the UK the only way we can get together is over Zoom. This has been our go-to method for the past 4 years.
Normally it’ll start with me (Tom) coming up with a basic track layout. Pianos chords, strings, bassline and drums. Then I’ll send Jen the track, she’ll riff ideas on the sax and send them over to me.
Together we’ll work on the track, find the best sax lines and hey presto!
What advice would you give to aspiring DJs and producers?
Take your time. I see new producers rushing to release music when it’s just not ready. The excitement takes over, they put it out and then look back a few weeks later and think “it’s not good enough”.
So take your time to not only learn your craft, but also in terms of releasing music to the world. When you think you’ve finished a track, sit on it for a week or two. Come back with fresh ears, and i guarantee you you’ll find something you want to change.
What do you want listeners to take away from your music?
We both try to make uplifting, joyful music. We want people to listen to our stuff with a smile on their face. We try and bring a summer vibe to all our productions and I believe people resonate with this.
Do you have any other big milestones in your career that we should know about?
Jen has released an official collaboration with superstar DJ/Producer ‘Kryder’. Their track ‘On The Beach’ was released on Armada Records and has reached over 1.8 Million streams on Spotify alone.
Tom has also released on Armada with an official remix of ‘Good’ by MistaJam & Kelli-Leigh.
Tom & Jen have been supported numerous times on Radio 1, had multiple plays at festivals including Glastonbury and have gained over 15 million streams combined.
