How can smaller labels offer more creative freedom to electronic artists?

Smaller labels often offer more creative freedom to electronic artists, as they don’t face the same pressure of commercial success and, therefore, typically have a more flexible approach to music production and artist expression.

This allows artists to explore unconventional sounds and develop a unique style, as smaller labels are more willing to take risks on innovative and niche genres.

What’s your strategy for talent discovery, and how can artists cater to that strategy, albeit with their own sonic identity?

Many artists are from Nico’s or my network, but we are active on the current platforms and are already looking for new artists with unique voices.

Besides the quality of the music, it is often the presence and frequent networking on those platforms that help artists get signed. Eventually, creative content helps creative music get noticed.

How does your label approach artist development differently than a major label?

Working with us will undoubtedly feel more personalized compared to major labels. This could include more one-on-one time with artists, tailored marketing strategies, and support focusing on long-term artistic growth rather than short-term commercial success.

How does a smaller label tackle the challenge of limited resources?

Smaller labels often have to be more innovative and strategic with their resources. Therefore, we are trying to find the right niche markets and spots for our works that will also help the artist.

How does your label plan on fostering close relationships with its artists?

Building close relationships with artists means checking in with them regularly to see if any new work has been done, guiding them and giving feedback, and understanding and helping with their struggles regarding writing, finishing, or placing music.

It supports the artist’s vision and goals and provides a collaborative and supportive environment that values the artist’s input and well-being.

How do you envision the growth trajectory for artists signed to your label?

We are looking to consistently put out great records by the artists that we sign and help them have a successful release every time, with all the means that we have available.

It’s impossible to guarantee success, but one thing is sure: quality will prevail, which will be the motif for all the music we put out.

What networking advantages come with being part of a smaller label?

Artists will have closer access to label executives and collaborators and benefit from being part of a tight-knit community where support and collaboration opportunities are more readily available.

I started helping some artists now releasing on my label a while ago position their music in our scene, and the results have been great already.

How does being in the electronic music industry specifically affect your strategies?

Because we’re in the electronic music scene, a lot of the music we’re releasing needs to be playable for DJs, but we also want them to be played by suitable DJs.

We carefully put together strategies on how to achieve this and how to help tracks make an impact.

Lastly, what advice would you give to an electronic artist considering signing with a smaller label?

Artists should consider their long-term goals and how a smaller label can help them achieve them. They should assess the label’s track record, approach to artist development, and how much creative control they will retain.

It is also crucial to understand the contractual terms and ensure they have a clear path for growth and support within the label.
