Martin Horntveth’s Gouldian Finch project unfolds as a captivating musical odyssey in his debut album, “Hatch”. A journey through the leftfield side of electronica, that leans on elements of freeform jazz, rap and experimental. The Norwegian producer has shared something completely unique, where each track sounds markedly different from the previous. There’s elements of Aphex Twin in there, alongside bits of SBTRKT or Todd Terje.
Opening with “Like a Magnet,” the album draws on infectious 2000s house vibes, weaving a dreamlike soundscape with harmonious male and female vocals. Focus track, “Breathe”, that features Loney, Dear, takes us on an emotive journey accompanied by strings, amplifying the emotional depth. Experimental track, “Stuck In The Matrix”, stands out as a blend of upbeat drums, rap verses and breakdowns of half time string arrangements.
Horntveth’s production expertise shines, ensuring each track is a distinct sonic experience. Gouldian Finch is a testament to Horntveth’s genre-spanning artistry, delivering a nuanced and compelling album that transcends expectations.
Martin tells us, “I’ve been contemplating creating this album since the early 2000s, but the process has always been interrupted by some better-paying gig or project. Most importantly, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to “land” on a sound that would encompass everything. It was only when I decided to put everything I love into the same pot that it clicked, and it made sense to release the music.”
