In this interview, we sit down with Novem Vivit, an Electronic music DJ and Producer originally from Frankfurt, Germany, to explore his journey in Electronic music production. He shares his experiences, favorite tools, and advice for aspiring producers, and provides valuable insights into his creative process.

Hi Novem Vivit! How’s it going?

Hello! I’m doing well, thank you for asking. I’m excited to be here for this interview.

Can you walk us through your journey into Electronic Music production? What first inspired you to start producing?

My journey into Electronic music production began as an extension of my passion for Techno. Being born in Frankfurt Germany, it was fairly easy to be surrounded by so much Dance Music and talent. The desire to create my own unique sound and share it with the world was my primary inspiration. I wanted to contribute to the genre I love.

What are some of your essential pieces of equipment or software?

In my studio setup, some essential equipment includes my MacBook, a high-quality set of studio monitors, and a reliable audio interface. Regarding software, I rely on Ableton Live for music production, which has been my go-to digital audio workstation for years.

Do you have a favorite DAW?

Yes, my favorite DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is Ableton Live. I find its workflow, flexibility, and features perfectly suited to my style of music production.

How do you approach starting a new track? Can you share your production process?

When starting a new track, I often begin with finding inspiration, which can come from various sources like life experiences (shows or new music), or simply experimenting with sound. I lay down the basic groove and create the drum patterns, including the kick, snare, hi-hats, and percussion. After I got the groove, I work on sound design, which is a significant part of my process. I delve into synthesizers and samplers to create unique sounds and textures. This involves tweaking parameters, experimenting with modulation, and layering different elements to achieve the desired sound.

Finding the right balance between the rhythm and melody is key to creating a compelling Techno track. Afterwards in the mixing stage is where I ensure that every element of the track fits together cohesively. I use EQ, compression, and effects to fine-tune the balance and clarity of the mix. Achieving a clean and powerful mix.

Can you tell us which plugins, effects, or VSTs you use most frequently when producing your tracks? What are some of your favorites?

Some of the plugins I frequently use include Serum, and Sylenth1 for sound design. For effects, I rely on many Ableton plugins or FabFilter plugins for EQ and compression, and more. My favorites also include the U-He Diva.

What do you think is important to keep in mind when producing?

One important aspect of production is maintaining a balance between technical precision and creative freedom. It’s crucial to have a vision for your track while also allowing room for experimentation and artistic expression. Using references is also a key element when working on music, to find your right balance of all instruments and quality of sound.

What is one piece of production advice you would give to a novice producer?

My advice to novice producers is to be patient and persistent. Music production is a journey that requires dedication and continuous learning. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and explore different techniques and styles. Find yourself some templates and study every stem. Then I recommend to re-construct a similar track with your style.

Also be honest with yourself or find yourself friends who are not afraid to tell you the truth about it being sh*t or a banger.

How do you know when a track is finished?

Knowing when a track is finished can be a challenging aspect of music production. I usually consider a track complete when it aligns with my initial vision, and conveys the emotion or message I intended. It’s about achieving that sense of musical fulfillment but sometimes as an artist it is extremely difficult to be 100% satisfied.

Which element of a track is your favorite to produce and why?

My favorite element to produce in a track is the melody or the lead synth. Melodies are where I can truly express my emotions and creativity. Crafting a compelling melody that resonates with the listener is one of the most rewarding aspects of music production for me.
