If you’re into music or dream about making your own music someday, you might have wondered at some point where the sounds you hear in songs come from – or how a song was created in the first place. It’s highly likely that most of the songs you’re listening to have been sampled from or inspired by legendary and pioneering Black musicians. Marvin Gaye, Frankie Knuckles, Dr. Dre, Diana Ross, and the list goes on. The sounds of early Chicago house, East and West Coast hip hop, and Detroit techno fuel today’s artists and drive music producers to follow in the footsteps of the greats that came before them.
To celebrate Black History Month, our friends over at BPM Create are honoring some of these icons with their newest curated sample packs. Each pack is stacked with sounds curated from across their online sample library platform and is neatly organized with a certain genre, style, or vibe in mind. There are six packs in total with more than 130 samples to explore that nod to Motown, disco, house, techno, and hip hop.
In all, BPM Create has nearly one million royalty-free samples and thousands of sound packs, so the inspiration you can find is pretty limitless. If you’re looking to get into music production and don’t know where to start, this could be the place for you. Pairing the sounds you choose from their extensive library with the DAW (digital audio workstation) of your choice will have you making beats and creating your own music in no time. (You can even find some free sounds here!)
Of course, finding the right DAW is just as important, so do your research and choose one that’s beginner-friendly (like GarageBand, FL Studio, or Serato Studio). Your DAW will act as the core of your home studio and a hub that connects all your hardware and software instruments. Be sure to take advantage of the plethora of online resources available like tutorials and courses to learn the basics of music production. Once you’re all set up and have had plenty of practice, you’ll be ready to create your own personal sound.
So let’s jump in and get a closer look at the newest curated sample packs on BPM Create, inspired by legendary artists, producers, and musicians for Black History Month.
The Sound of Motown

Let’s first go way back to where much of hip-hop, soul, and R&B stems from: motown. This collection of sounds pays tribute to artists that created the “Sound of Motown” like Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations. Some of the labels featured in this curated pack include Big Citi Loops, Legendary Music, and Producer Loops.
New York 54

In the late ‘70s, it was all about disco balls, dance floors, and the legendary New York City nightclub Studio 54. This curated pack honors the iconic artists who led this movement, such as Donna Summer, Candi Staton, Gloria Gaynor, Diana Ross, and Vicki Sue Robinson. Drum loops, pianos, electric guitars, strings, and horns are all here.
Chicago House

Take it back to the old school with drums, organs, pianos, and vocals inspired by Frankie Knuckles, Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Phuture, and Jesse Saunders. Featured labels include Tech-It Samples, Banger Samples, and BPM Create.
Detroit Techno

Channel dancefloor beats and textures inspired by artists like Juan Atkins, Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, and Blake Baxter. Synths, leads, and drum loops curated from sound labels like Producer Loops, Bfractal Music, Catalyst Samples, Smokey Loops, and more.
East Coast Bridge

Time travel to NYC when hip hop’s early beginnings took hold of the music industry by storm. This pack represents that classic East Coast hip-hop sound embodied by artists and groups like Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Jam Master Jay, and Run-DMC.
West Coast Lean

Get that unmistakable ‘90s West Coast lean and wobble cemented by Dr. Dre, NWA, Snoop Dogg, and Warren G to name a few. This pack even has vintage and analog samples like synths, basses, and loops from labels like Loops 4 Producers, Certified Audio, and Looptroniks.
