The POVEC C1 fits into the trend of big sports shades, with onboard tech that is a game changer. Yes, I said onboard tech…

If you’ve been to any mountain town lately, you’ve noticed an overwhelming number of dudes with mustaches and mullets rocking big, old-school Oakley and Pit Viper-style frames. It’s a mountain-hipster monoculture, but it works, and there is also a very practical reason for these shades: they work incredibly well for mountain activities or anywhere the sun shines, for that matter.

The POVEC C1 Performance Sunglasses use solid-state electrochromic technology to change the lens tint in under a second. Instead of waiting for traditional photochromic lenses to respond slowly to UV exposure, you swipe a finger along the side of the C1 frame, and the lens changes from its lighter CAT 2 tint to darker CAT 3. Simply put, these glasses let you quickly change the tint as the light changes for better visibility.

No single lens suits all lighting conditions, and in this category of sports performance eyewear you will find many models offer swappable lenses for different conditions; this is also true in the goggle world. In Colorado, lighting changes quickly, and choosing the right lens can sometimes be a toss-up, especially on the slopes where light can be tricky.

After testing the POVEC C1 on evening mountain bike rides, walks, and general day-to-day outdoor use, these have quickly become one of my favorite pieces of performance eyewear. The technology is hidden, so there is no bulky frame, and the interface is a simple swipe to change the tint, and it happens almost instantly. In today’s AI-powered world, nothing surprises me on the tech front anymore, and POVEC uses technology not only practically, but elegantly and seamlessly.

That’s why the POVEC C1 earns our Editor’s Choice Award.

Electrochromic Sunglasses That Can Make A Change Up When The Light Changes

The big story here is obviously the lens tech. I’m usually a bit apprehensive about over-gadgeting myself outside, but POVEC feels more analog and organic than most tech. They just look like normal mountain-dude/dudette retro sunglasses.

POVEC C1 uses solid-state electrochromic technology with two user-selectable tint settings. Light mode is CAT 2 with up to 37 percent visible light transmission, while dark mode is CAT 3 and drops VLT to 9 percent.

The important difference between the C1 and conventional photochromic sunglasses is control. Basically, swipe once, and the shades get darker in brighter light; swipe again, and they lighten when cloud cover sets in.

Photochromic lenses respond automatically to UV light and typically need time to transition. POVEC claims conventional photochromic lenses can take 20 to 60 seconds to adjust, while the C1 changes tint in less than one second.

More importantly, you decide when it happens. Swipe forward or backward across the control area on the right temple, and the lens changes tint almost immediately.

On an evening mountain bike ride, this is brilliant. You can be hammering along an exposed section of trail with the sun still blazing in your face, then drop into a heavily wooded section where everything suddenly becomes darker. One swipe and you’ve got more usable light.

Pop back into the sunshine, and another swipe darkens the lens.

There’s no stopping to change glasses, no carrying a second lens, and no waiting around for photochromic chemistry to figure out what’s happening.

Where is POVEC C1 Essential?

My mountain bike testing quickly became the argument for why this technology exists.

Changing light is a constant problem when riding around sunset. Open terrain can still be incredibly bright while wooded trails and shaded sections become surprisingly dark. Traditional sunglasses can become too dark at exactly the moment you need to pick out nasty obstacles and changes in terrain. You miss a hidden rock, and it could mean a nasty wipe out, and

The C1 lets you react immediately. It doesn’t feel like another electronic device demanding your attention either. After a couple of rides, swiping the temple becomes instinctive.

That same advantage applies to road cycling, gravel riding, trail running, hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, and other outdoor sports where conditions change throughout the day.

They’re particularly interesting for cyclists because you’re already dealing with rapidly changing environments. Tree cover, tunnels, cloud cover, and low-angle evening sunlight can all happen during the same ride.

Instead of your eyewear dictating what conditions it’s suitable for, the C1 adapts when you tell it to.

POVEC C1’s Comfort and Fit

Technology doesn’t matter much if your sunglasses feel like you’ve strapped a Raspberry Pi to your forehead.

Fortunately, the C1 feels like proper performance eyewear.

At approximately 36 grams, they’re impressively lightweight considering the technology built into the frame. The wraparound TR90 construction feels flexible and secure, with plenty of coverage without becoming excessively bulky.

POVEC also includes three interchangeable nose pads, which makes dialing in the fit considerably easier.

I’ve worn the C1 for extended mountain bike rides and walks and found them incredibly comfortable. They stay put without creating excessive pressure around the temples or nose, and after a while I largely forget they’re there.

Retro Cool Style, But Not For Everyone.

Performance eyewear can occasionally look like something issued to an extra in a low-budget 1990s science-fiction movie or Kenny Powers (not in a good way).

The C1 avoids most of that. It feels more like the Oakley Blades and Factory Pilot shades that defined that style in the late 80s/90s which are white hot right now with the mustache lifty types.

At a distance, you will probably think these are a pair of Oakleys with their large wraparound shield-style lens; they are definitely in that vein. POVEC currently offers combinations including Matte Black with Green Revo, Matte Black with Gold Revo, Arctic White with Green Revo , and Denim Blue with Gold Revo. So if you can pull them off go for it, if you can’t, just write it off to “performance” not fashion.

Battery Life and Outdoor Durability

Despite being electronic, the C1 doesn’t introduce another device that needs charging every evening. POVEC rates battery life at up to 28 days based on four hours of daily use, with charging handled through USB-C.

The glasses also automatically power on when you open the temple arms and shut down when they’re folded, so there’s no separate power button to remember.

For outdoor use, the C1 carries an IP65 rating, providing resistance against dust and water splashes. POVEC also lists ANSI Z87.1 impact protection, an important consideration for cycling and outdoor sports where flying debris is considerably more concerning.

The lenses also provide UV400 protection against UVA and UVB radiation.

One thing worth noting is that the C1 currently provides two tint levels rather than continuously variable adjustment. You’re essentially choosing lighter or darker rather than moving through ten different shades.

In practice, I actually like the simplicity. More settings would inevitably mean more fiddling, which rather defeats the point. Will they probably come up with a middle tint in a v2, probably, and I will eat my words.

What’s in the Box?

POVEC gives you a pretty complete package, one that’s also environmentally friendly so added bonus points for that! Inside you’ll find the POVEC C1 sunglasses, protective case, USB-C to USB-C charging cable, user manual, interchangeable nose pads, microfiber storage bag and microfiber cleaning cloth.

The inclusion of multiple nose pads is especially welcome because fit matters considerably more on performance sunglasses than another fancy piece of packaging.

Are the POVEC C1 Worth $249?

At $249, these aren’t inexpensive sunglasses, but they do feel extremely reasonable for this tech.

You’re firmly into premium performance eyewear territory, where POVEC has to compete with established cycling and outdoor brands that have spent decades convincing us that owning six pairs of sunglasses (goggles too) is perfectly reasonable behavior.

But the Povec C1 does something meaningfully different. This isn’t Bluetooth for the sake of Bluetooth or an app you’ll forget the password to three weeks from now. There isn’t a screen floating in front of your eyeball telling you that your buddy Stew liked your Instagram post.

It’s technology solving an actual optical problem.

For mountain bikers, cyclists, runners and hikers, and snow sports enthusiasts who routinely experience changing light conditions, the ability to instantly change lens tint is genuinely useful. It is especially good during early morning and evening sessions, when light conditions can change dramatically during a single outing.

Summary

The best technology eventually stops feeling like technology, just like your smart phone or apple watch has become part of your daily routine. That’s what impressed me most about the POVEC C1.

Yes, electronically changing sunglasses sound futuristic and sure, a little dorky, but after using them for evening mountain bike rides, the whole thing starts feeling like a reflex. Bright section? Swipe. Dark trail? Swipe. Keep going.

Add excellent comfort, a lightweight 36-gram frame, impressive battery life, USB-C charging, impact protection and a clean performance-oriented design, and you’ve got much more than an interesting tech demo.

POVEC C1 has taken something we’ve essentially used the same way for decades and quietly asked a pretty reasonable question: why can’t sunglasses lenses change when we want them to?

And once you’ve ridden from blazing evening sunshine into a dark section of trail and changed your lens tint with one swipe, going back is a tough ask.
