When I first tried on the SPY+ Bowery sunglasses, the lyric from the Geto Boys, “Damn it feels good to be a gangster,” kept running through my mind. The new SPY+ Bowery sunglasses sit somewhere between high fashion and street style with a lot of attitude that comes along for the ride as soon as you slip them on.

There are sunglasses that simply keep the sun out of your eyes, and then there are sunglasses that become part of your look. The SPY+ Bowery in Gloss Black with the murdered-out Polarized Happy™ Lens falls firmly into the latter category. These aren’t shy. They’re bold, oversized, purposefully dark, and built for people who aren’t afraid of getting a few looks.

I’ve been wearing these for a few days everywhere from downtown to afternoons at the pool, and while they won’t replace every pair of sunglasses in your collection, they’ve absolutely earned a permanent spot in mine. I’ve never had a pair of shades with lenses this dark, and being in the Mile High City, we get some very intense sun in the summer, so I was immediately in love with the dark optics on these.

Design Style & Build Quality

The SPY+ Bowery was named after the street in NYC, and they nailed it. Part rock and roll, gangster, punk, and strung-out celebrity, these embody the Bowery vibe perfectly. The Gloss Black frame paired with the completely blacked-out polarized lens gives them an almost stealth-fighter aesthetic. Everything is “murdered out,” and it works. The glossy frames are nice, but be warned you are going to need to wipe them down a lot as they can get smudgy fast if you are handling them a lot.

The frame itself feels well made, with nice hinges and just the right amount of weight. There’s enough rigidity to inspire confidence that these glasses will last you a long time if you take care of them properly. The SPY+ Bowery comes with both a hard and a soft case, so you get a few storage options to keep them scratch-free.

One thing worth noting is the size. These lean toward the oversized end of the spectrum. If you’ve got a smaller face, definitely check SPY+’s sizing guide before pulling the trigger, or if possible, try them on at an authorized dealer. They’re exceptionally comfortable, but comfort doesn’t always equal perfect proportions.

For medium to larger faces, though, the Bowery absolutely nails that relaxed, effortless aesthetic that somehow looks equally at home behind the wheel of an old Land Cruiser or walking into a rooftop party.

What Is the Happy™ Lens?

SPY+ has been talking about Happy™ Lens technology for years, but it’s more than just marketing jargon.

Instead of simply blocking light, Happy™ Lens technology is engineered to allow beneficial long-wave blue light to pass through while filtering out the wavelengths that create visual fatigue. The result is a lens designed to improve mood, increase alertness, and enhance color and contrast while still delivering complete UV protection.

This particular model also uses SPY+’s polarized Happy™ Lens, which brings additional practical benefits:

  • Eliminates harsh glare bouncing off water, pavement, snow, and other reflective surfaces.
  • Lets you see beneath the surface of water, making details like rocks, depth changes, and fish dramatically easier to spot.
  • Delivers enhanced contrast alongside the mood-boosting Happy™ benefits.
  • Provides 100% UV protection while reducing eye fatigue during long days outdoors.

I haven’t done any journaling on whether my mood has changed when wearing the Happy Lens, but I do love the crystal-clear optics and dark lenses on bright days. What I can say is these lenses are incredibly comfortable to wear for extended periods. Eye fatigue feels noticeably reduced, colors retain their richness, and contrast remains excellent despite just how dark these lenses are. I usually get a bit of fatigue if I’m wearing shades for an extended period, but the Bowery didn’t bother me during a four-hour stint at the pool on a smoldering hot day.

Dark Enough For Even The Worst Hangover

These lenses on the SPY+ Bowery are dark. So dark in fact that they come with a warning telling you not to drive with them.

On bright summer afternoons or mornings, snow-covered mountains, beaches, lakes, or anywhere the sun feels like it’s actively trying to melt your retinas, they’re incredible. They knock the brightness down without flattening the world into a muddy gray mess.

The flip side? During peak daylight, they’re on point, but as shadows lengthen or weather changes, they might become too dark, so something you should consider.

Where they absolutely shine, though, is in that very specific lifestyle niche many SPY+ customers probably know well. Finished a sunrise DJ set after an all-night warehouse party? Walking back from a three-day festival where sleep became more of a rumor than a reality? These become your best friend.

Are the SPY+ Bowerys for you?

The SPY+ Bowery isn’t trying to be the one pair of sunglasses everyone should own.

It’s for people who spend serious time outdoors in bright conditions. It’s for skiers/boarders, beach days, mountain towns, photographers, festival veterans, DJs, producers stumbling out of the studio at noon after an overnight session, and anyone who appreciates a pair of sunglasses that can seriously tamper down bright sunlight.

They’re also for people who already own multiple pairs of sunglasses and understand that different lenses serve different purposes. If you’re looking for an everyday commuter pair you’ll wear from sunrise until dusk, this particular lens may be darker than you want.

If you spend your weekends chasing sunshine instead of hiding from it, you’ll appreciate exactly what SPY+ has built here.

SPY+ Bowery Summary

The SPY+ Bowery with the Gloss Black frame and murdered-out Polarized Happy™ Lens feels like sunglasses designed for people who actually live outside instead of just looking good on Instagram.

The oversized styling is confident without becoming silly, the build is premium, and the Happy™ Lens technology continues to be one of the more genuinely useful innovations in modern eyewear. Add polarization into the mix and you’ve got outstanding glare reduction and visual clarity that make long days under relentless sunshine noticeably more comfortable.

Just know what you’re buying. These lenses are unapologetically dark, and that’s precisely their appeal. They aren’t trying to do everything—they’re trying to dominate the brightest environments imaginable.

And after surviving an all-night festival, sunrise set, or marathon DJ session, sometimes that’s exactly what your eyes ordered.
