Some versions of nightlife are only described from the outside, usually by people who need it to be glamorous, dangerous, or doomed. Danny Blu’s “Heartbeat” comes from much closer to the floor. It is about the part of the night where the room gets loud enough that whatever you walked in carrying starts to loosen, and for a few minutes the whole point is just bodies, lights, sweat, bass, desire, and the relief of not having to explain yourself.
That has always been part of Blu’s world, but “Heartbeat” brings it straight to the front.
The track arrives as the lead single from UNICORN WARFARE VOL. 1, his new EP out October 13, and closes the project’s single campaign with a song built around escapism, surrender, and the club as a place where people can fall apart without necessarily staying broken.
Earlier singles “Type” and “Faithless” moved through rebellion and darker supernatural language. “Heartbeat” turns inward, letting the dance floor become sanctuary, temptation, and release valve at the same time.
Produced by Moris Blak, with vocals produced by Ryan Schumer, mixing by Thomas Warren, and mastering by Mike Piacentini, “Heartbeat” pulls from early-2010s pop euphoria but pushes it through something heavier and more jagged. The vocals are aggressive, the kick is built for bodies, and the whole thing feels like recession-pop after it has spent a few years in darker rooms.
In the interview below, Blu talks about nightlife as rebellion, the long path the track took with Moris Blak, and why he hopes “Heartbeat” gives listeners permission to release whatever has been sitting under the surface.
Interview With Danny Blu

What inspired you to write “Heartbeat,” and what does the dance floor represent to you personally?
To me, the dance floor is rebellion, freedom and ecstasy all wrapped up in one.
“Heartbeat” is about everything that makes the dance floor special to me. It’s about losing yourself and finding yourself simultaneously.
No matter what is happening in this overwhelming and difficult world, there is a place you can go to let everything out, to dissolve under the lights and bathe in the sound.
It’s about meeting people that change your life that you might never see again.
How did working with Moris Blak shape the sound and energy of “Heartbeat”?
Moris Blak is a surgeon of bass, to be frank. He’s also an incredibly trusted friend and colleague who I’ve toured with and created with for years now.
We understand each other and respect each other immensely. This track actually started off as a scrapped remix idea and came to me in a very different form.
I took it, demoed some ideas over it, and we traded it back and forth until it became the recession-pop dance floor banger it is today.
It’s really wild to see the evolution of a song from ideation to completion. “Heartbeat” in particular had a very long journey, but it truly rounds out the EP in a beautiful way.

The song is about escapism and surrendering to your desires. What do you hope listeners feel when they hear it in a club?
I hope they feel exactly that. I hope it inspires spontaneous makeouts and uninhibited dancing.
I’ve spent my entire adult life in the club and in nightlife. I’ve seen how the dance floor can create, destroy, rebuild, and inspire.
I hope that whatever emotions have been bottled up are released and embraced: joy, grief, sex, pain, whatever is bubbling under the surface.
In the dark, we get to be whoever we want to be and more. I hope this song brings people closer to themselves.
