Acustica Audio has released RUST 2, a passive equalizer plug-in built around a rare seven-band EQ design from the 1960s and powered by the company’s NOVA engine. The angle here is clear: fixed-band passive EQ tone with input-driven harmonic behavior, real-time visual feedback, Mid/Side control, and zero-latency tracking options.
RUST 2 is aimed at producers and mix engineers who want EQ moves to feel connected to gain staging. The seven-band fixed layout uses proportional Q and natural band interaction, which means the plug-in is built around broader tonal decisions instead of narrow corrective work. That makes it a better fit for mix bus shaping, instrument group tone, vocal polish, drum bus color, and stereo material where the EQ curve needs to feel musical rather than surgical.
The NOVA engine gives RUST 2 its other major hook. Input level directly affects saturation, so gain becomes part of the tone rather than a volume utility at the front of the plug-in. Push the input harder and RUST 2 moves from cleaner response into richer harmonic behavior, with the saturation tied to how the signal hits the modeled preamp stage.

RUST 2 Turns Input Gain Into Tone Control
The dual preamp behavior is probably the most interesting part of the release. Vintage Mode is designed for richer coloration and a stronger old-school saturation profile, while Modern Mode keeps the response cleaner and more controlled. That gives RUST 2 two clear lanes without forcing users into a separate plug-in or a long menu of modeled hardware variants.
That setup feels useful because passive EQ already encourages broad, intentional moves. Add input-driven saturation, and the plug-in becomes less about adding a high shelf or cutting low mids in isolation. It becomes a way to decide how hard a sound should hit the circuit before the EQ does its job.
On a vocal, Vintage Mode could add density before a broad top-end lift. On a synth bus, Modern Mode could keep the signal controlled while shaping the low end and upper mids. On a stereo mix, Mid/Side processing gives users another layer of control, especially when widening, tightening, or separating center information from side content.
Acustica Audio RUST 2’s Modern Mixing Workflow
Acustica also adds workflow tools that bring RUST 2 closer to current production needs. The plug-in comes in mono and stereo versions, with full Mid/Side processing for stereo work. Extended mode includes a real-time EQ curve display and input signal scope, which helps users understand how the plug-in is reacting as gain changes.
The ZL version is also useful for recording and monitoring. Zero-latency operation means producers can place RUST 2 in a tracking chain without adding delay that gets in the way of performance.
RUST 2 is available now at an introductory price of €59 until June 3, 2026 at 11:59 pm CET, before moving to the regular €149 price. Existing owners of the original RUST or NOVA family products can check their account for upgrade pricing.
