The Berlin-based musician is experimenting with sound & neuroscience

Ambient maestro Robot Koch, performing under his moniker Foam & Sand, today released “Circle 61,” the latest single from his highly anticipated upcoming album, Quieter.  One of the more serene and thought-provoking releases we’ve covered, this is a release for those with a disposition to the technical side of songwriting and production. If you’ve got a yoga class booked.. this might be the perfect soundtrack.

“Circle 61” embodies the core ethos of Quieter, which is described as a deeply restrained ambient work designed to be a “slow invitation into presence, attention, and emotional contact”. The music intentionally avoids demanding focus, instead aiming to meet the listener quietly and create space for subtle beauty and deep rest. The soundscape is delicately constructed using distilled elements, primarily analog synthesizers, live vibraphone, chimes, and bells. These sounds are gently processed using tape for warmth, emphasizing patience and simplicity as compositional tools to restore continuity of attention.

Foam & Sand’s work, and by extension “Circle 61,” is positioned at the intersection of music and science, a field that has defined much of Koch’s recent practice. Koch is known for exploring how sound can shape inner states and emotional experience, bridging artistic intuition with research-informed approaches. His compositions have been featured in clinical research into psychedelic-assisted therapy with the Beckley Foundation/Beckley Psytech, and he has collaborated with organizations like the Monroe Institute and Seeded Sound on research into brainwave entrainment and neural regulation
