ASUS Republic of Gamers has announced the release of the ROG Kithara, its first open-back planar magnetic gaming headset, developed in collaboration with HIFIMAN. The headset was first shown at CES 2026 and is positioned as a crossover product aimed at players who want higher-fidelity sound without leaving the gaming ecosystem.

Unlike most gaming headsets, which rely on dynamic drivers and closed-back designs, the Kithara uses 100 mm planar magnetic drivers tuned specifically for positional accuracy and clarity. The frequency response spans 8 Hz to 55 kHz, allowing the headset to reproduce subtle spatial details such as footsteps, reloads, and environmental movement while keeping louder effects from masking those cues.

The open-back design creates a wider soundstage than conventional gaming models, improving separation between elements and giving players a clearer sense of distance and direction. ASUS says this approach is intended to support competitive play while also making the headset suitable for music and media use outside of gaming sessions.

ROG Kithara will be available starting February 2, 2026, for $299 at AmazonMicroCenter, Best Buy, and Newegg.

Designed for Positional Audio and Communication

The Kithara’s tuning focuses on maintaining definition during dense in-game moments. Instead of boosting bass for impact, the headset emphasizes balance across low, mid, and high frequencies to keep overlapping sounds intelligible. This makes it easier to distinguish nearby movement from ambient noise, particularly in fast-paced multiplayer environments.

For communication, the headset integrates a full-band MEMS boom microphone with a 20 Hz to 20 kHz response range. Separate signal paths for audio playback and microphone input reduce interference and crosstalk, keeping voice transmission clear even when game audio is loud. The microphone is mounted on the cable rather than the ear cup, which allows for consistent placement without adding extra weight to the headset frame.

Compatibility and Long-Session Comfort

ROG Kithara is built to work across gaming and audio setups. The included balanced cable supports 4.4 mm balanced, 3.5 mm, and 6.3 mm single-ended connections, and a USB-C to dual 3.5 mm adapter allows connection to PCs, consoles, laptops, and mobile devices. With a 16-ohm impedance rating, the headset can be driven directly from most devices without requiring an external amplifier.

The physical design prioritizes long-term comfort, using a metal frame with eight levels of adjustment, a padded headband, and two interchangeable sets of ear cushions. These options allow users to fine-tune fit and slightly alter acoustic response depending on preference or session length.

A Move Toward Hybrid Audio Gear

By combining planar magnetic drivers with a gaming-focused feature set, ASUS is targeting users who want a single headset for competitive play and everyday listening. The collaboration with HIFIMAN reflects a broader trend of gaming hardware moving closer to traditional high-end audio design, especially as players increasingly use the same gear for gaming, streaming, and music.

The ROG Kithara is available starting February 2, 2026, with a retail price of $299.
