If you’re not familiar with Lord Genmu, you’re about to be. The off-the-wall organized chaos bass music producer delivers sonic pallets reminiscent of G Jones, while bringing some of the most blistering sound design in recent memory. His song selections for this month’s chart, spanning Nitepunk, Juelz, W IN K, Chee, and more are a reflection of where his sound inspiration comes from.

For his Sigils release, Genmu told us that the songs were written while he was going through an immense transition in his life. He added onto this saying, “I often found myself in front of my laptop as a way to sort of zone out through a lot of what was going on. So each time I sat down, I wanted to write something that made me feel happy in a way that I could only get when I made a track that I really enjoyed. So the album is a culmination of the escapism I witnessed last year”

The most challenging song to write on Sigils was Assembly Line, with Genmu telling us “it’s probably the most chaotic song on there and I feel like it transforms itself throughout its duration. I was really stumped in the second half but after enough tinkering I was extremely proud of the end result.”

One of the keys to the production process for Sigils was Sabroi AS Steps, a plugin created by Godtier-signed artist, Sabroi. Lord Genmu also mixed Sigils as he made it, and would push his production in any direction in order to achieve the sound he was striving for. In addition to AS Steps, some other favorite plugins of his include Portal and Ableton’s stock Saturator. One of his favorite production tricks to get his sound is “abusing Ableton’s warp modes until you get some interesting results. I feel like people sleep on how much utility they have.”

Some of the initial hype for Sigils was brought to us by the infamous G Jones, who DM’d Lord Genmu asking for stems for the track, Dranzer, before it had come out. We asked Lord Genmu how it felt for G Jones to ask for stems with him saying “honestly extremely surreal, he had asked me for stems for Dranzer and I remember my first reply was “fr???” Like I was in disbelief. So happy that my song is a g jones edit forever dub.”

Outside of G Jones and electronic music entirely, Lord Genmu would love to collaborate with Bladee, hikaru utada, and Ice Spice, with Charli XCX or Joji as two pop stars he’d like to produce for as he strives to make music full time and do cool projects through it.

Right now, he’s going to be playing a lot more shows this year, working on more collabs and original singles. Long term, he hopes to see electronic music become more driven by independent agencies, with talent dictating bookings rather than an agency.
