Detroit producer Omar S has spent decades building a house and techno catalog through his FXHE Records imprint, keeping his releases closely connected to the city’s underground community. But his latest appearance comes from much earlier in his life, before the label existed and before his productions reached an international audience.
Short Attention Records has released a rare recording from his teenage years as the 50th installment of its Mix Series, bringing previously recorded material into circulation as part of the Mexican label’s tenth anniversary.
Released October 13, 2026, Short Attention Mix 050 was originally recorded using a Yamaha MD4 multitrack recorder before being transferred to VCR tape. The recording contains music associated with early Chicago house and Detroit electronic production, providing an opportunity to examine the records Omar S was interested in during his formative years.
There is something particularly interesting about hearing an artist’s early musical preferences after becoming familiar with their professional catalog, especially when their later work has developed such a recognizable relationship with the music of a particular city.
The release also introduces a record label with an unusual approach to distributing DJ mixes. Short Attention Records, founded in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, in 2016, continues producing handmade CDs and distributing them free through independent record stores. Its catalog includes vinyl and digital releases, but the Mix Series has become an important part of the company’s identity, connecting producers and DJs from different underground communities through recordings that listeners can take home and collect.
Reaching the 50th edition with an archival recording from Omar S connects that distribution approach directly to one of the artists whose music helped influence the label’s direction.

How Short Attention Records Connected With Omar S
The collaboration began during a visit to Detroit in 2026, when Short Attention Records founders Hector Ram and Ricky Ramirez met Omar S at his record store and party. The encounter brought together two independent operations with a shared interest in physical music and underground house and techno, though they developed in different cities and under different circumstances.
Short Attention Records was established in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, in 2016, emphasizing house and techno influenced by Chicago and Detroit’s recording histories. Over the following decade, the label released music on vinyl and digitally while developing a dedicated Mix Series featuring producers and DJs associated with underground electronic music.
Previous contributors include Warren Harris, known as Hanna, and Marcos Cabral, whose recordings appeared as editions 048 and 049 respectively.
The label’s connection to Detroit reflects its established musical interests, but the 2026 meeting with Omar S created an opportunity to work directly with an artist tied to those influences. His decision to contribute an archival recording also gave the label something different from a contemporary promotional mix. The teenage tape documents the music he was selecting and collecting before FXHE became an established record label, allowing the series to feature an earlier period of his development.
Our interview with Detroit producer Patrice Scott explored how record collecting contributed to his early musical education, beginning with visits to record stores during childhood. Scott also discussed the influence of Chicago producers including Larry Heard and Frankie Knuckles alongside Detroit artists Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, and Jeff Mills.
Those experiences show how individual record collections and exposure to music from neighboring cities helped shape Detroit’s electronic music community.
