A classically trained pianist, vocalist, producer, and programmer, Pol Sembrano drew heavily from his lived experience to create his independent, self-titled debut album. Launched on February 20, 2026, the album pairs emotionally deep lyrics with new-wave influences to create danceable synth-pop.

“Themes include the joy of escapism, isolation, unrequited love, death, and hope. Musically, the songs are melodic, hook-driven, danceable, and thought-provoking. Listeners may be able to connect with the music and apply it to their personal lives,” Sembrano says.

A Musical Identity Rooted in Experience

Based in Seattle, a hub of indie music, Sembrano defies being confined to a single genre. Though he is inspired by electronic, pop, new wave, and experimental music, he has a classical training foundation that influences his melodies and overall composition.

The lyrics are rooted in his personal experience, including his survival of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia. While visiting West Railay Beach, an earthquake in the Indian Ocean sent a tsunami straight to his position.

“As I saw the wall of water approaching the beach, I ended up gathering my belongings and headed inland, hoping to escape the enormous wave. Unfortunately, I was engulfed by the water and was completely submerged amidst rocks and other debris. I was incredibly fortunate to have lived to tell this story,” Sembrano shares.

That tragic event was a vivid reminder of life’s preciousness and didn’t deter him from continuing to travel. Instead, Sembrano embraced his life to the fullest, wanting to experience new things and express himself through his music.

The musical artist has traveled to 57 countries, and his love of travel is reflected in his songs. Sembrano wrote “Anywhere” on the album to pay “homage to world travel.”

An Emotional Core in His Music

Sembrano’s survival story is only one part of his life experience. He has faced other forms of adversity, and his travels have informed his worldview. He desires to encourage listeners through his music and introspective lyrics. Sembrano’s music includes encouraging lyrics for those who have suffered hardship and oppression, such as the song “Open Mind.”

As an indie artist, the Filipino-American has full creative control over his musical endeavors, and he used that freedom to take on multiple roles during the recording of his debut album. It was recorded entirely without a band or other songwriters. The debut album was produced by Canadian musician and producer, Casey Lewis of Echo Base Studios.

Influenced by artists from the 80s and 90s like Depeche Mode and New Order, Sembrano’s album has a retro new wave/synth-pop vibe, with songs armed with compelling hooks.

Sembrano has received praise for his album, which was described as “danceable yet thought-provoking, nostalgic and fresh” by Big Takeover Magazine

“I have always been confident in myself as a musician and by writing, producing, arranging, and performing on my own. I am a classically trained pianist, but I am also inspired by other genres of music, in this case, electronic/dance music,” Sembrano shares. “The music is hook-driven with melodies that intertwine, especially at the end. This enables the listener to hear subtle nuances which make for an interesting listening experience.”
