Barbarito Capote, better known as DJ Dove, lands on Toolroom with “Lonely No More,” a sleek, disco-tinged update with an unmistakable 80s vocal lead. It’s his debut single for the label, though not his first brush with the camp. Dove appeared on Toolroom’s earliest compilation era, and the connection finally pays off with a solo release that feels both classic and current.
Dove’s roots run deep. Raised in Hoboken by Cuban parents, he came up across the tri-state circuit and has logged collaborations and credits with Inaya Day, Sandy Rivera, Junior Sanchez, and DJ Disciple, while touching down on labels from King Street and Nervous to Soulfuric, 2020Vision, Stealth, and Bambossa. He’s always kept one foot in soulful vocals and the other in jacking grooves.
That balance is front and center on “Lonely No More,” which pulls from the lineage of mid-80s R&B, recontextualising it for today with punchy drums, brass stabs, and a rolling low-end built for peak energy without bluster.
For his mix, Dove leans into that continuum: upfront disco house and vocal heaters, New York swing, and clipped percussion that leaves space for the singers. Expect a through-line of groove rather than whiplash transitions, subtle dynamics over showy breakdowns, and a few tasteful curveballs from his back catalog and peers
