Onysia’s landmark 10th release is here – and it’s about as loud and proud as you’d expect.
The label celebrates double digits of carefully curated underground heat with “Pretty Girls Don’t Dance (Remixes)“, a razor-sharp package featuring new weapons of the classic track by J Gabriel and Chuffing Buffy (two distinct aliases of the same talented producer) from DJ Sneak, Tripmastaz, Dorian Paic, Sascha Dive, Delano Smith, Rick Wade, and a double dose of the original artists.
DJ Sneak and Tripmastaz, longtime friends of the imprint, open proceedings with a dual-pronged disco-tech assault, reviving their RareTwo Inc. chemistry under solo aliases. Dorian Paic then flips the original into a swerving, low-slung acid funhouse, stitched together with tongue-in-cheek percussion and manic detail. J Gabriel steps in next with his signature edge, dissecting the original’s bass and rhythms into darker, tighter patterns.
Sascha Dive follows with an organ-led daydream of a remix, lush and cinematic, while Delano Smith’s dub-heavy rework takes the reins on a reissued cut from the original EP. Rick Wade closes the circle with a soulful, deep-house rendition of “Ritual” that sounds like it’s been ageing in a Detroit vault for years. The package as a whole showcases the entire spectrum of deep house, with a track for everyone.
This package also includes an alternate, deeper J Gabriel mix – a reminder that under either alias, he’s a shape-shifter rooted in precision. For over 15 years, J Gabriel / Chuffing Buffy has been honing a deliberately off-kilter sound, attracting support from legends like Laurent Garnier, Zip, Carl Craig and Chez Damier. His studio fingerprints have touched everything from stripped-back minimalism to reggae explorations with dub god Scientist.
Remix EPs are great, but ones that highlight all the best a label has to offer are always better. And, with J Gabriel at the helm steering the chaos into something unshakably cool, this is about as good as it gets.
