Our exclusive interview with Bass Physics reveals the creative process behind “WHERE I’VE BEEN” and its significance in the larger narrative of “Lost In Space.” The interview delves into the artists’ journey, exploring how their personal and artistic evolution shaped this track. It’s not just a song; it’s a story of overcoming, a musical exploration of internal and external struggles. This piece is an integral part of their debut LP, promising to be a sonic journey that reflects their growth, challenges, and triumphs in the music industry.
1 – What inspired you to create “WHERE I’VE BEEN” and how does it reflect your artistic journey?
“WHERE I’VE BEEN” started out with only a simple piano holding the chords with some orchestral elements, swelling into a bare-bones version of the synth drop you hear now. I sent it over to Micah because I had always wanted his edgy and powerful style of vocals on a track and when I heard one of his songs I knew it had to happen. He sent me the first version back and I re-recorded all the instrumental parts with my guitar to make it feel more like a rock song, which grew into the complex but powerful production you hear today. The lyrics tell a story that implies “there is no hardship anyone can give me that I haven’t given myself, thus I know where I’ve been and I am proud of it making me the man I am today.”
This is a perfect reflection of my artistic journey, like most artists, I have been through a rollercoaster of successes and failures and losses and gains. Through it all, I never gave up on the vision and dream of becoming a better musician and producer so I could properly display my emotions through my music with sonic clarity and justice. Having this song start so barebones and transform throughout shows the tenacity required to be a musician today.

2 – What does the dynamic range of sound in “WHERE I’VE BEEN” signify to you personally?
I really wanted “WHERE I’VE BEEN” to take the listener on an unexpected journey, and accomplishing this made it one of my favorite creations yet. Something that feels familiar, beautiful, fist-gripping, and nostalgic, all at the same time. The song starts out with my guitar chugging, on top of a creepy feeling pluck that immediately tells the listener they are not on planet Earth anymore. The vocals grip you and make you think back to early 2000s emo-rock feels, and the first drop leaves you with a modern electronic production that still sounds familiar on the biggest of stages. As the song progresses, they are brought back to reality, only to be torn back into darkness with the intensity of the second drop. Micah could not have captured this story better with his vocals and this song feels like it was meant to be written.
To me, this signifies the journey of my production and musician skills. When I listen back to my first album released in 2012, you can really hear how much work went into learning and practicing. I love seeing progress.
3 – How does “WHERE I’VE BEEN” fit into the larger narrative of “Lost In Space”?

Lost In Space is a collection of music that encapsulates the last 12 years of my musical and emotional journey. “WHERE I’VE BEEN” reflects on some of the more intense emotional states that I have experienced, or the “dark side” of the album if you will. It has an edgy and gritty feel to it, especially in the second drop, that you can really feel the tension within.
4 – How do you balance the emotional depth and the high-energy elements in your tracks?
I think always starting with a song that can be played just on guitar/piano and vocals by themselves is crucial. If you have a song that is a hit with just two elements, it will maintain the emotion and feel when you bring in electronic production and complexity. Balancing this singability with hard hitting sonic landscapes really ties together the Bass Physics sound and name. It is Bass music, but the Physics of love and life are highlighted with beautiful emotional elements.
5 – Finally, what message do you hope fans take away from your upcoming album?
For anyone feeling lost in space, there is a way back home to your true self. Never give up and always give back.
