A new report, “The Future of the Creator Economy Report 2023,” has been released by Epidemic Sound, a leading music licensing platform. The report delves into the world of content creation, highlighting the challenges faced by creators as well as their future expectations. Based on a survey of 1,500 monetizing content creators, the comprehensive report sheds light on emerging trends in earnings, monetization, music, and artificial intelligence (AI) within the creator economy.

The report indicates that content creation is a thriving industry, with creators increasingly adopting new monetization strategies and AI tools to enhance their content and stay ahead of the competition. The majority of content creators (76.5%) have seen significant increases in income over the past year, and 83.5% expect their income to continue to rise in the coming year. This is mainly due to expanded monetization options on social media platforms (74.9%). Creators are also diversifying their income sources, exploring avenues such as sponsorships, product sales, affiliate links, and crowdfunding, rather than relying solely on traditional advertising revenue. This shift in revenue sources corresponds with the shift in platforms, with TikTok (30%), YouTube (25.8%), and Facebook (16.5%) emerging as the highest-earning platforms.

In the face of mounting production costs, which can significantly impact their earnings, most content creators (91%) plan to cut production costs in the coming year. “Epidemic Sound is proud to lead in the creator economy, providing valuable insights and tools that enable content creators to maximize their potential earnings in this rapidly changing industry,” said Oscar Höglund, CEO of Epidemic Sound. “We are keen to spotlight the trends driving this vibrant sector and how content creators are adapting to seize these opportunities fully.”

The report also reveals that despite potential concerns regarding the authenticity and originality of AI-generated content, AI has been widely adopted in the creator economy. Creators use AI-powered tools or applications in their content creation process to automate repetitive or time-consuming tasks and create more personalized content experiences for their audience. Another major revelation is the indispensable role of music in content creation and performance, with 97.7% of content creators viewing music as crucial for creating engaging content. However, budget constraints and copyright issues have often led creators to compromise on their music choices.
