Cardo Packtalk Outdoor Hands-Free Intercom System + Music (Duo kit $449.95)

The Cardo Packtalk system is the ultimate solution for simple wireless communication on the slopes, while cycling, or just about anywhere, and doesn’t require a cellular connection. We tested the Cado Packtalk system with two users up in Keystone for voice communication, streaming music, and phone calls. It is truly one the best hands-free communications systems we have ever used.

The Cardo Packtalk device allows you to create an intercom mesh network within seconds, so you can easily communicate with your friends on the slopes, cycling, or other activities that use a helmet. The Cardo differentiates itself from other devices using mesh network technology. The more devices you use together, the further you can be away from one another. The max distance with more than two users, they say, is roughly 5 miles, although we only tested it with two users and never had any issue with dropouts (within a mile or so of each other).

Packtalk Outdoor operates on its own network, keeping you connected everywhere you go with constant connectivity unless you go out of range. No internet or cellular network is required! Cardo uses Dynamic Mesh Communication (DMC™) networking technology that creates real-time “living” connections, actively seeking to connect to other units. DMC will adapt based on the behavior of units in a network to ensure communication is maintained in the best way possible.

  • More users means a larger range for the whole group
  • Each user can send and receive signal to overcome obstacles
  • Up to 1km/0.6mi range between two users – up to 3km/5mi for the whole group

The kit works with various helmets, but we suggest using a helmet that was made to add external headphone kits to, as it makes installing easier. Luckily, we had a few old-school RED helmets that worked perfectly with this kit. You can mount the unit on the helmet with a mounting plate or connect via the temporary mounting plate that clips onto the helmet straps, which we opted for.

Once on the mountain, you simply turn on your devices, get them synced, and you can start talking to each other hands-free with no buttons to push. Going solo? Just flip the switch to music, and you can stream music from your phone and take phone calls if you get lonely or need to contact your crew.

Key Features:

  • Speakers by JBL Sound for big, high-quality sound
  • Along with voice communication, it also Streams Phone conversations and music
  • Waterproof and dustproof
  • When used with 3-4 users, a mesh network can go up to 5 miles
  • Easy-to-use controls
  • Hands-free instant on communication between users
  • No cell or wifi connection is needed to use
  • Ten hours of battery life

Sonos Move 2 ($449)

The Sonos Move 2 delivers a great refresh on the original Move and brings some impressive improvements like longer battery life and improved sound output. We have the original Move and love it, but the sound has definitely been improved in a big way.

The mad geniuses at Sonos have changed the sound architecture so you get two speakers creating stereo sound in very small footprint. This change-up allows the Move 2 to deliver rich, deep bass, crisp highs, and a well-balanced midrange, so you get the most out of your music.

The portability and connectivity factors are where the Sonos Move 2 truly shines for more all-around users, allowing you to take the music around the house via WiFi and off-grid with the onboard Bluetooth technology. With its durable build and weather-resistant design, this speaker is ready to party and it even has a built-in handle.

The battery life also gets a serious bump, so you don’t have to worry about always having it on the charger at home when moving it around. The Move 2 provides 24 hours of continuous playback on a single charge, which is perfect for weekend trips. Run out of juice? No problem, just use your portable power supply and the USB-C charging input, ensuring a quick and convenient power-up when needed.

Sonos has also included a nice array of smart features and a relatively intuitive touch interface. Integration with popular voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant enhances the overall user experience, adding a layer of convenience to the already impressive package. We never use this feature, but definitley nice to have it.

If you are looking for an excellent all-around speaker that can head for the hills on your next adventure, the Move 2 is an excellent option.
