With her recent remix of Motorcycle’s iconic track “As The Rush Comes” for its 20th anniversary, Tara Brooks has once again proved her mastery in blending timeless melodies with contemporary rhythms. This remix isn’t just a nod to the past; it’s a fusion that breathes new life into a classic, demonstrating Brooks’ deep respect for the genre and her innovative approach to music production.

Tara Brooks, a Los Angeles-based DJ and producer, has long been known for her genre-blending style. Her influences span a wide range of electronic music, from acid house to dark disco. This versatility is evident in her latest project, where she revisits “As The Rush Comes,” a tune that has resonated with her since its release. In an exclusive interview, Brooks delves into the creative process behind the remix, her connection with the original creators Gabriel & Dresden, and her artistic journey in weaving the past and present of trance and dance music.

What sparked your interest in remixing “As The Rush Comes” for its 20th anniversary?

“As The Rush Comes” is an uplifting classic that’s always had a special place in my heart. It’s truly timeless. I hadn’t heard it in years & when announcing their 20th anniversary, I felt inspired to create my own version of the #1 Billboard Hot Dance Airplay tune.

How did you get connected with Gabriel & Dresden (aka Motorcycle) and what do you admire about their work?

Being from Southern California, Gabriel & Dresden have been a big influence in the West Coast dance, electronic, & trance scene. They’re absolutely brilliant producers who created some legendary classic tunes. I met Dave years ago and he has always been kind & down to earth. He attended my show at Public Works & I was happy to hear his love for my set. This wonderful reconnection lead to me remixing ATRC

What challenges did you face during the remix process of “As The Rush Comes”?

My biggest challenge for most remixes is which style & direction to go. I usually end up with multiple edits because of my passion & desire to hear and share it in a multitude of styles & genres.

How do you balance classic trance euphoria and modern dance aesthetics in your remix?

I focused on keeping the emotion & soul alive while keeping it modern and exciting. I wanted to incorporate an energetic & swingy techno groove interchanged with breakbeats on the intro, break, & outro. I kept the break airy & moody, and Jes’s vocals light and sexy. I felt and sprinkled a little splash of Trentmoeller inspiration as well.

How does your music production process differ when working on a remix versus an original track?

I feel full freedom when approaching an original track & will experiment in unique ways when sampling & drawing inspiration. I’ll typically find my main Hook, vocal, & bass first and then lock in the drum groove. While I also take risks & push boundaries in my remixes, I aim to keep the original hook & vibe at the heart of the track, letting those precious elements write & guide the rest.

Looking forward, what goals do you have for your music and career?

As I’m just wrapping up an album worth of unique tunes of all genres & styles, my recent evolution of sounds has kept me experimenting & digging deeper than ever. I can’t wait to share all my new music with you all! I recently discovered that Sasha did the film score for Globe’s New Emissions of Light and Sound in 2008. The idea really inspired me now that surfing has become one of my greatest passions. My recent goal has been to play more events in surf destinations. Looking forward to more gigs & surf in Hawaii, Bali, & playing Ocaso Festival, Costa Rica soon.
