Overview

I’ve been playing V-Drums since the early 00s and have always been a massive fan of these kits, primarily for practicing potential since I always lived in places where acoustic kits didn’t quite work. Since I first sat on the throne behind a set of V-Drums, many things have changed from modules to kits that look like acoustic drums; they have become more impressive on every level.
While at CES this past January, I saw the latest offering of entry-level V-Drums, the TD-O2KV series, and got to noodle around on them for a bit. This entry-level kit impressed me; from its compact size to its overall playability, it didn’t feel like hitting lunch trays, like most entry-level kits.
The Roland TD-02KV V-Drums are great for drummers of all levels, offering an unparalleled electronic drumming experience for their price and footprint. Packed with solid features that incorporate all that great V-Drum DNA, this kit provides an exceptional balance of affordability and performance. In this review, we will dive into the key features of the Roland TD-02KV and some other bits, including the specifically tuned V-moda / V-Drum headphones and the free Melodics courses available.
Before we dive in, there was another point of interest that we touched on with Roland’s V-Drum team that was exciting, and for any drummer out there, this info gives you some bragging rights. If you are familiar with the band Blondie, you might already know the name Clem Burke, as he was the uber-talented drummer. In 2008 he founded the Clem Burke Drumming Project to conduct scientific studies with drummers, from the calories you burn to the impact drumming has on the brain. In short, drumming is not only a significant workout for the heart and muscles but also for the brain. If you have ever thought about getting a drum kit, this research will give you some compelling reasons.

What do we like about the TD-02KV Kit:
- The price is fantastic
- It has a small footprint but still feels like a complete five-piece kit
- The surface response is excellent for an entry-level kit
- The free Melodics courses
What don’t we like:
- The sound module is limited
- It would be nice if there were some option to mount your laptop somewhere or a stand so you could use the training videos and software better.

The Sound Module
The Roland TD-02KV V-Drums are equipped with the latest TD-02 sound module, delivering incredible audio fidelity that replicates the nuances and dynamics of acoustic drumming. For an entry-level set of V-Drums, the pads representing your two up toms and floor tom are responsive to even the subtlest down stroke, giving you a bit more range when practicing. There are 16 kits you can play, and that’s plenty for an entry-level or even seasoned player who wants to get some practice in. There is enough variety to goofing around with different genres and eras. Still, they are limiting severe drummers who want the sound flexibility and variety that come with electronic drums.
When paired with the V-Moda VM-HD1 headphones, you are getting a fantastic sound that is specifically tuned for drums. The VMH-D1 headphones are a new collaborative effort between Roland and V-MODA (Roland owns V-Moda), offering a highly customized personal monitoring solution for electronic drumming. These headphones have been fine-tuned by the V-Drums design team and V-MODA engineers, ensuring exceptional sound quality for both V-Drums sets and other e-kits. Boasting intelligent and practical features, as well as a comfortable design, the VMH-D1 is a great addition to this kit and can grow with you as you progress to more serious kits. The accessories like rack mount and the ability to run the lead behind your head so the cables stay out of the way are also a nice touch.
Drum Head Feel + Expansion Options
One of the standout features of the Roland TD-02KV is its responsive and authentic playing feel. The mesh-head snare and even the rubberized toms offer a natural rebound akin to playing on traditional drumheads, providing drummers with a satisfying and acoustic kit-like playing experience. The responsive cymbals with a realistic choke function further enhance the overall authenticity of the kit. We think it’s worth stepping up to the 02KV model to get the snare head, as it’s the heartbeat of the kit in many respects. The Roland PDX-8 mesh snare pad has dual triggers and a tension-adjustable mesh head, allowing for rimshots and cross-stick techniques.
The other pads and cymbals will set you up for success as you migrate to higher-end V-Drums or even acoustic kits, although there will be a learning curve when transitioning to your first pair of acoustic drums. The other great part about this kit is that it allows you to upgrade to another cymbal, replace the pads with mesh heads, and move your kick pedal to an actual kick drum with a pedal/hammer that strikes a mesh pad.
To keep the price down and the form factor smaller, the hi-hat and bass pedal don’t connect directly to the hi-hat or a bass drum, which feels fun but something you get used to pretty quickly. Considering the design, the latency felt realistic, and in time, while drumming without making any compromises, it worked pretty well overall.
Different Drum Kits For Every Taste:
The Roland TD-02KV V-Drums have a diverse selection of drum kits covering various musical genres, making it a versatile choice for drummers with eclectic tastes. The TD-02 module includes 16 acoustic and electronic drum kits for any music style, ranging from natural and fat studio kits to massive rock drum sounds and modern electronic kits. There are just enough kits to keep things interesting and allow you to play various styles and explore your sound.
That being said, as you progress, these kits will eventually run their course and leave you wanting more. So, if you plan on committing to this instrument, it might be worth looking at some higher-end kits you can grow into.
Practice Features and Coaching Functions:
For drummers looking to enhance their skills, the Roland TD-02KV offers various practice features and coaching functions. The built-in metronome, recording function, and the ability to play along with tracks on your smartphone or tablet enable players to hone their timing, accuracy, and improvisation skills. The onboard coaching functions provide real-time feedback, helping drummers track their progress and refine their technique.

The kit also includes a set of lessons from Melodics that allow you to plug in your computer to the back of the TD-02 module and play along with the visual lesson. If you dig using Melodics, which you most likely will if you are a visual learner, you can opt to pay for a subscription that includes over 70 lessons. If you are really serious about becoming an accomplished drummer the Melodics lessons can help you get there faster but you should also try to find a teacher who can work with you one on one. There is just no substitute for a great teacher, not that we’ve found anyway.
Compact and Space-Saving Design:
The Roland TD-02KV drum kit has a compact and ergonomic design, which makes it perfect for drummers who have limited practice areas. It is lightweight and foldable, which makes storage and transportation easy. This drum kit is ideal for both home practice and gigging musicians playing in small spaces. It also gives you enough flexibility in the racks and mounts to dial in your ideal playing angles and distances, making for a better overall experience when playing/practicing.
Connectivity and Integration (optional wireless module and USB input)

The TD-02KV V-Drums have various connectivity options, allowing easy integration with recording software, computers, and mobile devices. So whether you want to practice by streaming in some music from your phone/tablet or lay down a beat in your favorite DAW, you can do it.
For wireless integration, you need to get the BOSS Bluetooth® Audio MIDI Dual Adaptor ($59.99) to enable this connectivity to your device. Once this is installed, you can wireless connect to your device and rock out with your own music and instructional videos. We highly recommend getting this module as it makes things a little easier to set up.

Want to make beats for your productions or be able to lay down a grove for your band? The USB-MIDI connectivity allows you to do direct recording and access to drumming apps. The module also includes audio output jacks to connect to headphones, amps, or PA systems. If you have always wanted to lay down your beats into a DAW via MIDI, this kit is perfect for smaller studios or bedroom setups. It’s a lot more fun to play the drums into a track than program them!
Summary:
Overall the Roland TD-02KV V-Drums deliver a great drumming experience that combines great sound quality, solid playing feel, and impressive versatility. With its innovative features, practice functions, and seamless integration capabilities, this electronic drum kit is a perfect choice for drummers at all levels. Whether you’re a beginner honing your skills or a seasoned pro needing a small and quiet practice kit, the Roland TD-02KV V-Drums will keep you stoked. For the money, you’re getting a solid compact kit that will let you update it as you get better.
