Combining a ‘white label’ ethos with cutting-edge technology, SetFreaks is putting exclusivity back into music. It allows DJs to level up their sets with exclusive limited-edition tracks from the best artists worldwide. And it places value back on music, with artists generously – and speedily – compensated for their creativity.
SetFreaks is the brainchild of Onnik Tavitian, a former DJ/producer turned full-time entrepreneur in everything music and IP related. “DJs of a certain era will remember the satisfaction of getting their hands on a great white label track on vinyl and playing it in their sets,” says Tavitian. “Many white labels were considered gold dust and these tracks made a DJ’s set unique. We’re recreating that exclusivity in digital format, bringing the art and display of curative talent back into focus.
“The exclusivity also gives the tracks an elongated life,” says Tavitian. “With each track limited to between 25 and 250 downloads, the music stays fresh for longer.”
Releasing techno, tech-house, house, deep house and melodic house, with plans to expand into other genres, SetFreaks is already striking a chord with big name artists and up-and-comers seeking alternative outlets for their tracks. Robert Babicz, Cristian Varela and Agent Orange DJ have already released music through the platform.
Favoring quality over quantity, SetFreaks’ crack A&R team is calling for demos – from new and established artists alike – for release through the platform. They promise a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer within days of your demo submission, with contracts drawn up swiftly.
“Thousands of tracks are released each day on other digital platforms,” says SetFreaks founder Tavitian, “and record labels often have long release schedules. Capping the number of tracks released each week on SetFreaks allows the artists to share the spotlight. At SetFreaks it’s the music that does the talking. Our limited-edition downloads are putting the value back into music by making sure the tracks on offer receive the unencumbered promotional attention they deserve and giving DJs the tools to curate unique sets to really stand apart.”
Using bespoke technology, each SetFreaks’ download is individually encrypted with a watermark. “It’s the best anti-piracy sharing technology out there,” claims Tavitian.
