Masque has taken one of the most personal recordings from his album Midnight Invasion and rebuilt it for a completely different musical setting. Released August 14 through EMPIRE, “The Pain, The Pain (Remix)” replaces the guitar-driven arrangement of the original with house percussion, a heavier electronic bassline, and production influences from bass house, future house, and UK garage.
The decision is an interesting departure for an artist whose previous releases have largely concentrated on theatrical rock, alternative pop, and emotionally direct songwriting. Masque has released music since 2021, drawing inspiration from Queen, Lady Gaga, and other artists who combine larger arrangements with personal subject matter.
His 2024 album Midnight Flames received a Best Rock Album nomination at the 2025 Hoku Awards, while his more recent work has continued examining mental health, identity, and personal experiences through rock-oriented production. Moving into house music gives him a chance to work with a different set of musical conventions while retaining the lyrical material and recurring themes of his catalog.
What makes this particular remix worth examining is the relationship between the original recording and the new arrangement. “The Pain, The Pain” was written around the experience of becoming trapped in recurring feelings of anxiety and distress, with repeated phrases representing the difficulty of moving beyond those experiences. The remix retains that repetition but places it within a production style where recurring vocal hooks are an established part of the arrangement.
It is a relatively direct musical decision, though it raises interesting questions about how a song’s meaning can change when you reconsider its instrumentation and intended listening environment.
Masque’s Rock Background Remains Part Of The Project
Masque is a Hawaii-born artist whose recording career began in 2021, with previous releases including Masqued Emotions, Midnight Flames, and their expanded editions. His influences include theatrical rock, alternative pop, and artists whose songwriting addresses personal identity and emotional experiences. Queen and Lady Gaga have been recurring touchstones, particularly for expressive vocal performances and the use of larger instrumental arrangements.
Midnight Invasion continues those interests through a collection of songs focused on difficult emotional states and the experience of confronting them.
Those influences help explain why “The Pain, The Pain” was originally developed as a rock recording. Much of Masque’s music concentrates on communicating personal experiences through direct lyrics and arrangements that support the emotional character of the writing. Mental health has been an important subject throughout his catalog, alongside identity and experiences connected to being part of the LGBTQ+ community.
We explored a related production process in our How It Was Made feature with Moog Diez, which examined how a recording by Ibrahim Maalouf was reconstructed using minimal house production, synthesizer programming, and additional rhythmic processing. Although the original compositions are different, each project involves reconsidering how established musical material can function within a club arrangement.
For Masque, the decision also introduces his songwriting to listeners who may be less familiar with his previous rock releases.

What The Remix Could Mean For Masque’s Next Releases
“The Pain, The Pain (Remix)” represents an opportunity for Masque to explore electronic production without abandoning the musical identity he has developed through his previous records.
The lyrics, subject matter, and vocal remain connected to Midnight Invasion, while the new arrangement demonstrates how those elements can be presented through a different instrumental format. That provides a possible direction for future remixes and collaborations, particularly if he continues working with producers who specialize in house and related electronic genres.
For now, the release offers an example of an artist using a remix to explore a different genre while keeping the original song’s subject matter. The decision to retain the chorus connects the new production to Midnight Invasion, and the change in instrumentation introduces a different context for lyrics that have remained central to Masque’s work.
“The Pain, The Pain (Remix)” is available now through EMPIRE. Listeners can find the release through Masque’s official Spotify profile, alongside Midnight Invasion and his earlier recordings
