Akai Professional has announced the release of the MPC XL, its most powerful standalone music production system to date. Designed as a computer-free studio centerpiece, MPC XL combines next-generation processing, expressive control, and extensive professional I/O into a single self-contained unit aimed at producers, beatmakers, and musicians working across modern production workflows.
At the core of MPC XL is a Gen 2 eight-core processor paired with 16 GB of RAM, delivering a substantial increase in performance compared to previous MPC models. Running the MPC3 operating system, the system supports large-scale sessions with up to 32 plugin instruments, 16 audio tracks, and 256 voices simultaneously. A 10.1-inch HD multi-gesture touchscreen with adjustable tilt anchors the interface, supported by dedicated hardware controls that provide direct access to sequencing, editing, and arrangement tools without menu diving.
Expressive Control and Advanced Performance Features
MPC XL introduces MPCe pads featuring 3D-sensing technology, allowing each pad to respond across multiple dimensions of touch. With four quadrants per pad, users can shape dynamics, modulation, and effects in real time, enabling detailed control over looping, layering, and sound manipulation during performance or production. This expanded pad architecture is supported by 16 touch-responsive Q-Link knobs with OLED displays, offering immediate visual feedback and contextual control over parameters.
Additional performance tools include a dedicated step sequencer with 16 RGB function buttons, an assignable touch strip for gestural control, and the XL Channel Command section, which centralizes key mixing and recording parameters behind a dedicated encoder and display. Together, these elements position MPC XL as a hands-on instrument rather than a controller-dependent workstation.
Connectivity, Sound Content, and Strategic Expansion
Designed to operate as the hub of a studio environment, MPC XL offers extensive connectivity. Inputs include professional microphone preamps with phantom power, instrument inputs for guitars and basses, phono inputs for turntables, and multiple outputs for external routing or multitrack recording. For hardware-focused setups, 16 CV outputs allow MPC XL to control modular systems and analog gear directly, while maintaining full standalone operation.
MPC XL ships with a broad collection of instruments, samples, and effects, including bundled sound content from Native Instruments’ MPC Edition Play Series and expansion libraries. Its internal sampler supports advanced workflows such as stem separation, slicing, time-stretching, resampling, and keygroup creation, alongside arrangement tools that mirror DAW-style sequencing and clip-based composition.
Akai Professional has also announced a new partnership with Spitfire Audio, beginning with MPC XL. This collaboration signals a broader expansion of high-end sound content and tools within the MPC ecosystem, with further details expected at a later date.
With MPC XL, Akai Professional reinforces the MPC platform’s role as a standalone production system capable of replacing computer-based setups, positioning the device as a long-term investment for producers seeking power, flexibility, and independence within a single integrated instrument.
