Independent music platform Vocana has partnered with MassiveMusic (formerly 7digital, part of the Songtradr brand portfolio) to expand its infrastructure and refine its user-centric payout model. The collaboration is designed to give independent artists a dedicated streaming hub that emphasizes fair compensation, fan engagement, and community-driven discovery.

Building A Platform Around Independent Artists

Vocana has been developing a streaming service that exists entirely for independent creators. The new partnership with MassiveMusic builds on earlier agreements with CD Baby and Distrokid, extending access to a broader catalog while keeping the platform focused solely on indie artists.

The service is currently in open beta for both artists and fans, with new music and features rolling out consistently. A full public launch is expected in early 2026. MassiveMusic’s role includes ingesting new releases, handling rightsholder-approved metadata, and providing access to a library of 33.5 million tracks hosted on a global server network. This ensures minimal latency for listeners while giving artists reliable backend support.

A User-Centric Payout Model

Vocana is implementing a payout structure that links subscription revenue directly to fan listening habits. Instead of distributing revenue through the pro rata method, which tends to reward the most streamed artists overall, Vocana allocates each subscriber’s fee to the artists that individual listened to. This model is designed to provide more equitable payouts for niche and emerging talent.

Neil Sheehan, President of Vocana, explains: “It’s been exciting to educate our distributor partners about how reporting will work and the advantages our model will provide for their artists. MassiveMusic has been key in supporting this effort and communicating exactly what rightsholders should expect.”

Paul Langworthy, CRO of Songtradr and MassiveMusic, adds: “At MassiveMusic, we are proud to be able to power platforms like Vocana that are taking a truly fresh approach to supporting independent artists, human curators, and real fan interaction. Vocana’s user-centric model is a bold step forward for independent artists, and we’re proud to support it with our licensing, metadata, and delivery solutions. Together, we’re not just enabling a new platform; we’re helping build a fairer, more sustainable future for music.”

Toward A Fairer Future For Indie Music

By focusing exclusively on independent catalogs, Vocana aims to build an environment that reflects the priorities of artists and fans outside of the mainstream. Its platform emphasizes artist-fan connection, fraud prevention, and human-led discovery, creating a space where community and creativity remain central.

With MassiveMusic administering licenses, managing reporting, and powering the infrastructure, Vocana is positioned to grow into a reliable streaming alternative for those seeking transparency and accountability in how revenue is shared. For artists, this creates a payout structure that responds directly to their listeners. For fans, it ensures that their subscription dollars go to the music they actually engage with.

Now in public beta, the service connects listeners with new music and ensures subscription revenue flows directly to the artists they stream. Vocana is set to fully launch in early 2026.
