Tips and Strategies for New WoW Players

Don’t Start with Classic

WoW is currently split into two major versions: Retail (modern WoW) and WoW Classic, which is a recreation of the original 2004 release. And Classic is really not a great place for total beginners.

This version is much harder, slower, and doesn’t have all the Retail’s helpful tutorials and new player hints. You’re thrown into the deep end, and it’s up to you to figure everything out on your own, which is extremely overwhelming and confusing for a newbie. So if you’re not sure which version to play, it’s best to start with Retail to learn the ropes and then decide if you’re ready for the Classic experience.

Try The Game for Free Before Buying

WoW Retail is free to play up to level 20, which gives you a fantastic chance to try it out before buying a subscription. Those twenty levels are more than enough to get a feel for the game and decide if you want to keep exploring the world and dive deeper into the expansions.

Play What You Like

When picking a class for your in-game adventures, don’t get caught up chasing the meta. Instead, choose something that you genuinely like by the look, the description, or the playstyle.

If you put in the time to research each class, that’s fantastic. But keep in mind that the more guides you read or watch, the more you risk leaning toward someone else’s opinion. Tips and recommendations are great, but in the end, your choice should be based on your own preferences and gut feeling. Remember that this is the character you’ll be following for hours, so stick with whatever feels right for you and you alone. The class you really enjoy will be much more fun to play than some meta pick that you’ll end up hating after a few quests.

Enable Auto-Loot

With auto-loot enabled, you automatically pick up your rewards from mobs and chests instead of manually clicking each item you want to collect (which is super inconvenient and often causes you to miss lots of loot by accident).

To set it up, hit Esc to open your Main Menu, then go to Interface, look for the Auto Loot option, and check the box.

Don’t Skip Quests

Questing is your bread and butter when you’re starting out, as it gives you pretty much everything a new player needs, from lore and gear to the XP needed to level up.

Try not to skip quests, especially the main storyline, and focus on getting most of your XP from them. Yes, you’ll hear plenty of people say that leveling through dungeons is faster. And it’s true, dungeons do give more experience, but if you only do dungeons, you’ll miss out on a whole lot of story and tons of other discoveries that are absolutely vital for a new player.

So take your time and enjoy questing. There’ll be plenty of chances to run dungeons and grind mobs later.

Dungeon Tips and Tricks

Dungeons can seem pretty intimidating for newcomers, especially those who play solo and have to group up with random people to actually do the content. But there’s no need to worry! Dungeons are nowhere near as scary as you might think. In fact, they’re fun and straightforward, and to start out, you definitely don’t have to be a PvE expert or know all your class abilities by heart.

Dungeons scale to your level, so if you go in early on, you’ll actually be extremely strong, even if your character only has a couple of basic abilities unlocked. Lower levels are honestly the best time to jump in and give dungeons a try. You’ll get to learn in a relatively safe environment where the mobs won’t one-shot you while having a real chance to finish the run and grab some good loot.

Don’t worry about managing gameplay and group chat. Groups often coordinate through chat or sometimes voice channels (especially in higher-level content). But in the beginning, you really don’t have to stress about this at all. The truth is, there’s usually very little communication in random dungeons—sometimes none at all—so you won’t have to juggle fighting mobs and typing long messages to your teammates.

Don’t pull mobs unless you are the tank. You probably already have some idea about the basic group roles. If not, here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Tank: Takes damage and keeps enemies focused on themselves.
  • Healer: Keeps everyone alive.
  • DPS (damage dealer): Focuses on taking down enemies.

One of the most important rules in any PvE group content is to not pull mobs (i.e., not do anything that makes enemies start attacking you and the group) unless it’s your job as the tank. Tanks are usually the ones doing pulls, so if you’re playing DPS or healer and accidentally attract a bunch of enemies, it can end very badly. The safest strategy here is to follow the tank but keep your distance, and always watch where the group is going so you can stick to the same route and stay together.

And lastly, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Yes, sometimes deaths and wipes happen. And sure, some of them might happen because you’re new and still figuring things out, but no matter what you do wrong, it can almost always be fixed. If you’re struggling to tank, your healer can often carry you if you pull small groups carefully. If you’re still not sure how to heal, your teammates can usually survive for a while on their defensive abilities and self-heals. And if your DPS isn’t great yet, the rest of the group can make up for it just fine.

You’re learning, and that’s what matters. You might mess up once or twice, but by the third time, you’ll know what to do and avoid repeating the same mistake. Bit by bit, you’ll sharpen your skills, gain confidence, and soon will be clearing those dungeons like a pro!

Don’t Rush and Enjoy the Journey

Starting WoW as a brand-new player, don’t feel pressured to race to max level or chase the top-tier gear you’ve seen other people wearing. Take your time to explore, experiment, and discover things at your own pace, in the way that feels right for you.

If you started playing because a friend or family member wanted you to join them, don’t let them push you to rush all the way up to their level right away. Trying to max out in a very short time is really stressful, and you probably won’t enjoy the experience at all. It’s much better if your game buddy creates a level one character too, joins you on the same server, and helps you learn step by step. It’ll be much more fun, more relaxed, and a lot more effective.

And finally, always remember that WoW is a game, not a competition or a second job. So take it casually, enjoy the ride, and focus on having a good time!
