Music production is demanding, often requiring long hours of dedication and focus, and producers spend more time at their desks as the industry evolves, fine-tuning their craft. This sedentary lifestyle, while seemingly harmless in the short term, especially for younger producers, poses long-term ergonomic challenges. Maintaining proper posture and a comfortable workspace is crucial for immediate productivity and sustaining a lifelong career in music production.

Ergonomics, often a buzzword, is a vital aspect of a producer’s life. It’s common to postpone concerns about posture and workspace setup, especially when the cost of ergonomic solutions seems daunting.

Enter companies like Flexispot, which aim to bridge this gap by providing affordable and practical solutions to enhance workspace ergonomics. Recognizing the importance of this, Flexispot sent me their E7 Standing Desk for a thorough review, focused on its suitability for music producers. Is the FlexiSpot E7 Standing Desk the ergonomic solution music producers have been waiting for? Will it earn its place in the modern studio setup? Before we delve into the core review, let’s first understand what the E7 Standing Desk is all about, setting the stage for a deeper analysis of its impact on music production. What I Liked About The E7 Standing Desk

Lots Of Bang For Your Buck

I’ll begin this section by stating that this standing desk is quite affordable and an excellent choice for music producers and gamers seeking a budget-friendly standing desk for their primary workstations or, like myself, requiring additional ergonomic studio space for synths and other equipment.

While I’ll discuss the absence of some premium features later in this article, it’s challenging to find fault in what this desk offers, given its highly competitive price – currently less than $300 for just the frame at the time of writing. However, you’ll need some material for the surface, which you can make or purchase from Flexispot. So, suppose you’re a producer or creative aiming to enhance your studio within budget constraints, which I understand many “starving artist types” face. This reliable option delivers robust performance, an appealing appearance, and affordability.

A Wide Range Of Heights

I stand at a decent height, 6′ 3″, and often encounter standing desks that don’t reach my desired height. This usually results in me having to hunch over a bit when using them, whether for a laptop, DJ decks, or other equipment.

However, the E7 Standing Desk offers the flexibility to be adjusted to the perfect height for your needs. This means I can maintain an upright and comfortable posture while sound designing on my synths, eliminating concerns about back strain or fatigue caused by poor posture.

Great Color Options

Many budget-standing desks typically come in limited color options, often restricted to matte black or white plastic. However, Flexispot eliminates this trend by providing additional wood-grain choices for an extra cost. This option adds a more natural and visually appealing aesthetic to the desk, making it a perfect match for my studio setup. I believe it would also appeal to many others.

In summary, selecting a color that complements your workspace is much more convenient instead of being limited to the primary color choices offered by many other standing desks in the budget range.

It’s Customizable (For A Price At Least)

In its basic configuration, the desk comes under $400 once you’ve acquired the addon desktop for the frame itself. However, this is just the beginning. I’m mentioning this price point because I received the version for review. However, customization options are available if you’re interested in a few additional features for the desk, such as built-in charging ports, enhanced cable management options, and more.

What I Wasn’t Crazy About

It’s Heavy

My studio is located upstairs in my house, and I must admit that getting the entire kit upstairs for assembly was quite a task. Now that it’s assembled, it’s safe to say it’s not going anywhere, for better or worse. While the kit can include wheels on the desk’s legs to facilitate transportation and movement, its considerable weight makes it a challenging solo endeavor.

The packaging does mention that it’s designed to be assembled and moved by a team of two people. However, we’re all responsible adults here, and nobody wants to risk injuring themselves while trying to move a desk for the sake of a slice of pizza and a couple of beers.

It’s Not The “Best” On The Market

To sum up, it’s essential to understand that this desk doesn’t aim to be the absolute best or make grand claims. While Techradar may have named it one of the best standing desks this year, Flexispot’s primary goal is to provide an affordable and accessible standing desk solution for music producers, creatives, and more. If your main requirement is a standing desk that improves ergonomics while you work, this is an excellent choice.

Certainly, other desks on the market come with built-in charging stations, organizational features, drawers, and an array of additional functionalities that position them as strong contenders for the title of the best in the world. However, you’ll often find yourself paying a premium for these features.

I want to emphasize this point because many producers invest significant time and resources into their studios and strive for the best. If you’re a professional producer with a substantial budget to enhance your studio with top-tier gear, better options may be available. But if you’re looking for a straightforward and practical solution, there’s no better choice.

Final Thoughts

It’s an ideal desk for anyone from music producers to gamers seeking a cost-effective solution without compromising essential features. With its adjustable height, this desk caters to a wide range of users, ensuring comfort and promoting good posture, necessary for long hours at work. The color options deviate from the standard fare, offering a refreshing aesthetic appeal. While it’s not laden with high-end features, it strikes a commendable balance between affordability and functionality.

However, it’s crucial to recognize the FlexiSpot E7’s limitations. Its weight, while indicative of sturdiness, can be a drawback for those frequently rearranging their workspace. It’s not the top-tier option in the market, and those seeking luxury features might find it lacking. But, for its price range, it delivers reliably on its promises. It’s an excellent choice for those starting or working within a budget, providing a versatile, ergonomic solution without breaking the bank. If you’re seeking a no-frills, practical standing desk, the FlexiSpot E7 is a compelling option.
