We have been looking for a portable camping toilet for a while and got the chance to meet the InstaPrivy founder at Outdoor Retailer in June. Everybody poops, and this is a fantastic solution for overlanding and more wilderness types of camping situations where you will need a solution for your bio breaks. Yes, this may be too much information, but we put this to the test, and it worked well, from privacy to comfort to simple set up and cleaning.

Design and Build Quality:

Pro Tip: Add some sanitary wet wipes to your InstaPrivy Backpack for cleaning afterward. It’s also good to keep a few extra bags in there, just in case.

Setup and Assembly:

Setting up the InstaPrivy Camping Toilet is a straightforward process. You find a stable piece of ground, preferably by a tree or some shade, pull the toilet out of the backpack and fold out the legs so it’s standing evenly. Then take out the InstaPrivy shelter tent; this is a bit tricky to fold up, so practice it a few times before heading out. It’s also a good idea to have some tie-downs or a clip just in case it’s a bit windy, as the cover can easily blow away, and it’s easier to keep it out rather than folding it up each time. Lastly, set up your bags, add a liner (it soaks up the pee for longer use), and make sure there is TP in the cover, and you are good to go. We recommend using wet wipes for a cleaner feeling and rash prevention. Once again, gross, we know, but a stinky rear end is not good anywhere, especially in the woods.

Comfort and Functionality:

Considering it is a portable camping toilet, the comfort level InstaPrivy provides is impressive. The seat size is adequate, and the ergonomic design ensures a comfortable sitting experience. The height of the toilet is also suitable for most users, mimicking the feeling of using a regular household toilet.

What’s unique about InstaPrivy is that you sit the tent portion on your head while doing your business; we’re serious about that. It’s also important to remember that in most situations, it’s mandatory that you pack out everything, including your remains. So we recommend bringing a lined plastic garbage bag, disinfectant spray, and a “rocket box,” aka a sealable bucket that you can then put the remains into for packing out.
