Nearly half way through 2023 and here we are talking about how fantastic a 2011 track from Maceo Plex resonates over a decade later. In fact, it’s an unreleased one which is just getting to see the light of day thanks to a Crosstown Rebels compilation that’s given the tune a pair of wings. Crank it up for good measure and while you’re at it, peep the 14 others which we’d like to think were better than the rest this past month.
Who doesn’t love a good mystery? Venice Club is just that! The most we know so far is the group is comprised of well-known Parisian musicians who decided to make some summer-ready tunes and release them via Dave 1 and P-Thugg of Chromeo‘s Juliet Records. The funk is strong on “Freedom”, and Irfane’s vocals are as welcome as ever!
SG Lewis is back with his first new songs since 2021’s Times with the double A-Side “Missing You/Something About Your Love”. “Something About Your Love” is admittedly a love song from Lewis to a lover but also to Daft Punk, whose influence is evident on this track. These songs are yin and yang, the first being the banger and the latter designed to live on your soundtrack for the summer.
AXNÉR is the duo of Londoners Chris Davies and Julia Axnér. “Got The Look” was originally released in December of 2021 and has been given a fresh summer remix by Al Kent for this July’s dancing public. This remix is the feel-good version, and there is no doubt that it’s going to make you feel good every time you hear it!
“Feel Good (Part 1)” is a good old-fashioned disco song. Dexter Jones has brought all of the swagger of a 70s disco track, and thanks to modern production techniques was able to create a tight funk-laden experience. The horns are bright, the congas add a nice layer of rhythm, and the bass ties it all together.
Taken from the EP of the same name, Pecoe‘s “Feel The Vibe” is a great funk/disco escape from our everyday routine and encourages the listener to feel the vibe and get up and dance! The addition of the female vocal over the driving bass of the track softens it up around the edges, while the rhythm guitar drives the overall pace of the track. Check out the full EP on Rare Wiri Records.
Mannheim-based producer, Gorge helps Deepalma celebrate a decade in the biz with this slow-burning he magic he calls, “Sleepless.”
Label head JKriv knows how to make the bass sing and on “Try Again” he brings Brooklyn-based Nick Hanson and Phenomenal Handclap Band onboard to handle the vocal duties on this uplifting track. This track really encapsulates a funky New York vibe and is made brighter with live instruments. Check this out on the Razor N Tape EP Something Else.
Poolside is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the release of their first album Pacific Standard Time, so what better time to have Roosevelt step in with his excellent remix of the classic Neil Young track “Harvest Moon”? This remix adds a little bounce to the original dream-pop Poolside version and once again proves that classics can be updated without losing the beauty of the original.
